Paul Rudd does not know if Ant-Man 3 will happen but is hopeful that it will. The Ant-Man franchise began in 2015 and was used to help bring the Marvel Cinematic Universe down to Earth a bit after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, it was a property that Marvel Studios developed for years before with Edgar Wright set to direct the film. He left the director's chair before production beginning over creative differences, but Paul Rudd remained with the film to star as Scott Lang and took on a larger role to help rewrite the script.
The first Ant-Man was a moderate box office success by the MCU's usual standards as it grossed $519 million worldwide. A smaller budget by Marvel's standards helped make this success possible, and Ant-Man quickly became integrated into more MCU stories. He joined Captain America: Civil War and Marvel fast-tracked a sequel, Ant-Man and The Wasp, that hit theaters last year. The sequel made over $620M worldwide and fans enjoyed Rudd again in Avengers: Endgame earlier this year.
The affection that many have for Rudd's Ant-Man and the success of the franchise has left many hoping that Ant-Man 3 or Ant-Man and The Wasp 2 is part of Marvel's Phase 4 plans. Franchise director Peyton Reed has previously told Screen Rant that he is hopeful the movie will happen, but Rudd is not as sure. When Yahoo asked him about the prospects of Ant-Man 3, here is what he said:
I don’t know. You need to make a call to the top brass and start a campaign to make it happen.
Marvel Studios has yet to announce or confirm any of their plans for Phase 4, so the lack of an announcement for Ant-Man 3 is not concerning. Rudd being in the dark on the potential for a third film isn't too surprising either, as actors can sometimes be the last people to when or if a movie is happening. But, there is also the possibility that Rudd does know whether or not the film is going to happen, but he can't confirm it to the press. After all, Michael Douglas said earlier this year that there has been talk about doing Ant-Man 3.
Until Ant-Man 3 is confirmed, Rudd suggests fans should start an online campaign to show Marvel how much interest fans have in seeing the continuation of this story. It has previously been said that a third film could focus even more on the Quantum Realm and would likely give Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) a more substantial role too. With Scott Lang reunited with Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and an older Cassie Lang (Emma Fuhrmann) at the end of Avengers: Endgame, there are plenty of different directions for Ant-Man 3 to go. Now we'll just have to wait and see if it does happen.
