Michael Pena may have revealed Marvel Studios is already working on Ant-Man 3. Marvel Studios has taken a few chances over the last ten years, and for many, Ant-Man was deemed a big one. Even after Marvel made Guardians of the Galaxy a worldwide hit, there was plenty of doubt that Ant-Man could succeed. Some of this came from the obscurity of the character, but also because of the development issues it had. Edgar Wright developed the project for years, but he eventually left and was replaced by Peyton Reed.

Ant-Man proved the doubters wrong with the heist comedy fairing decently well at the box office. It was a favorite among critics, so much so that Marvel Studios reshuffled the Phase 3 slate to fit in Ant-Man & The Wasp. They've yet to even release a trailer for the sequel, but Pena says there are already plans to finish the trilogy.

IGN spoke to Michael Pena as part of the press rounds for 12 Strong, where he stars alongside Chris Hemsworth. IGN asked him if the two talked about the shared universe they both take part in. Pena says just barely, but his answer also includes a mention of a third Ant-Man movie he hopes he'll be part of. This isn't confirmation it will come, but is an early indicator that Marvel has plans to complete an Ant-Man trilogy.

We talked about it on the first day. It's a whole different kind of club to be in, the Marvel Universe. I don’t know if they'll use me for the third movie, I still really don't know. It's cool to make a little bit of a mark on that Marvel Universe and it's kind of a cool club, they run a really cool studio.

Michael Pena as Luis in Ant Man

Ant-Man is one of six non-Avengers MCU movies to become a franchise, with the likes of Captain MarvelDoctor Strange, and Black Panther very likely to get sequels/trilogies of their own. In all of the other franchises, Marvel Studios has completed the trilogy, or have plans to do just that. Even if Ant-Man & The Wasp hasn't hit theaters, knowing Marvel Studios is thinking ahead is hardly a surprise.

Not only does the prospect of a third Ant-Man bode well for the Phase 4 lineup, but it also should be an indicator of where Marvel Studios' faith is in the first sequel. Fans may not have seen anything from Ant-Man & The Wasp yet, but Marvel surely has. The fact that they are developing a third movie should mean they have confidence in the sequel. Hopefully, it won't be too much longer before everyone else gets to see why Marvel could have such faith.

That said, Marvel has yet to confirm a third movie is coming and likely won't for sometime. They may have a plan in place for a third film, but if Ant-Man & The Wasp disappoints at the box office, they could change course quickly. Since the movie does come out in just a few months, fan will get a better sense of Ant-Man 3's chances this year. But, it may not be until late next year that Marvel confirms their intentions. When we do find out, hopefully Pena's Luis will be part of it.
