As audiences eagerly await the character's official arrival, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's Kang the Conqueror actor Jonathan Majors opens up about his love for playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe baddie. Majors made his franchise debut in the Loki season 1 finale as He Who Remains, the mysterious creator of the Time Variance Authority living in the Citadel at the End of Time who warns Tom Hiddleston's titular character and Sophia Di Martino's Sylvie of the more dangerous variants of himself out in the multiverse. Majors is properly bringing Kang the Conqueror to life with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, seemingly serving as the film's central antagonist, but this is only the start of his time in the universe.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss his biographical war drama Devotion, Jonathan Majors looked to the future to discuss his tenure as the MCU's Kang the Conqueror. When asked if getting to play variants of the character is what drew him to the role, the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania actor emphatically agreed, feeling excited to play "multiple versions" of the iconic villain. See what Majors said below:

Yeah, absolutely. That’s what’s on the page. That’s what the IP says. I was cool, very cool. Kang just lives in his own world in the MCU. No spoilers here, but there’s so many variants of him. And with the powers that are the MCU, that intelligentsia and that brain trust there, they’re just really working to use the IP to its best ability, and it’s extremely humbling that they picked me to step into that. So I’m honored to do it, and I’m always excited to see what we’re doing. And yes, six years after Yale and ten years after North Carolina School of the Arts, my first drama school, it’s what you always hoped for as an actor. Kang is a career in itself. It’s either the cake itself or the cherry on top, I don’t know. But to play multiple versions, it’s just beautiful. It’s a workshop every day.

Kang's Variants Can Make Him The Most Compelling Villain Yet

Jonathan Majors as Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania

Audiences have been eager to see Majors' take on Kang the Conqueror since the Lovecraft Country alum was announced to be playing the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania villain, with anticipation growing even higher with his surprise appearance in Loki's season 1 finale. Following the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, the void for a new MCU big bad to succeed Thanos became a major point of discussion among both audiences and comic book fans, though even prior to Majors' casting, Kang became one of the biggest names thrown out, with some taking into account the tease of multiple universes existing in Avengers: Endgame. Given the character has the ability to both time travel and has genius-level intellect to travel through the multiverse, it made the most sense for Kang the Conqueror to step in as the next major threat, even if others remained hopeful for a Mephisto appearance.

Unlike the other antagonists before him, however, Kang has a unique nature of getting to appear with a variety of personalities across his various MCU appearances in the future. The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trailer and D23 footage have already teased a very serious version of the character in comparison to the lighter one seen in Loki season 1, including his reference of having killed at least one Avenger in the past. Interestingly, however, there does still seem to be a slight hint of a better dynamic in the trailer, offering Paul Rudd's hero help getting him and his family home, though likely at a cost Ant-Man can't abide by.

While Thanos remains a fan-favorite MCU villain for his sheer devotion to his cause, as well as the somewhat understandable nature of his goal, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's Kang the Conqueror is already on his way to becoming the most compelling antagonist yet in the franchise. Majors' further teasing of multiple other variants on their way in the MCU, it will be interesting to see if any prove to actually be allies for the heroes of the universe, and which will ultimately be the villain for Avengers: Kang Dynasty. Only time will tell when Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hits theaters on February 17.
