Marvel star, Evangeline Lilly, shares an Instagram post welcoming actress Kathryn Newton to the production of the upcoming film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The first installment of the franchise, starring Paul Rudd as the titular Ant-Man, debuted in 2015 to largely positive reviews. The film follows Scott Lang (Rudd) upon his release from prison and his attempts to earn enough money to support his young daughter, Cassie Lang. After teaming up with his previous cellmates on a heist, he inadvertently becomes entangled with the scientific research of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), who has created a powerful shrinking technology. To avoid another mark on his criminal record, Lang agrees to collaborate with Pym and his daughter, Hope van Dyne (Lilly) and test out the suit that transforms him into “Ant-Man.”

After the success of the original film, a sequel premiered in 2018 and re-focused the narrative to spotlight both Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne, who became the superhero known as the Wasp. In Ant-Man and the Wasp, the protagonists try to access the Quantum Realm, a sub-atomic location that they believe has entrapped Hope’s mother, Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer), for decades. Along the way, they must confront a “ghost” named Ava Starr (Hannah John-Kamen), who suffers from the deleterious effects of an influx of quantum energy. Although the film ends with Scott and Hope successfully rescuing Janet, a mid-credits scene reveals that, upon a subsequent return to the Quantum Realm, Scott finds himself trapped there when Hope, Janet, and Hank turn to dust. The third film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, takes place after the events of the 2019 Avengers: Endgame and follows the group of newly-returned characters, including Scott’s daughter, Cassie.

On Instagram, Lilly celebrated the casting of Kathryn Newton, who will play Cassie Lang as a young adult in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The pair reportedly spoke on the phone and both shared their excitement for the new shoot. Check out the post below:

In the initial two films of the Ant-Man franchise, actress Abby Ryder Fortson played Scott’s young daughter. After the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scott was imprisoned in the Quantum Realm for approximately five years. Upon his return in Avengers: Endgame, he was reunited with an older Cassie played by Emma Fuhrmann. For the third movie, Newton’s casting confirms that she will step into the role for the foreseeable future. Her story arc within Ant-Man 3, however, remains largely unknown.

Considering the success of the prior films, it will certainly be intriguing to see what unfolds in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The franchise has garnered a passionate fan base due to its warmth and humor, often mitigating the gravitas of other Avengers films with its whimsical and silly embrace of a superhero who can shrink into the size of an ant. Rudd’s light-hearted portrayal of Scott Lang has often grounded the theatrics of the genre. His partnership with Lilly’s keen-eyed Hope van Dyne has also helped deepen the broader narrative. Overall, it will be exciting to witness what these superheroes do next.
