Peyton Reed praises Jonathan Majors' performance and explains how the two of them crafted Kang the Conqueror for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Although Majors first appeared in the MCU in Loki as He Who Remains, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quatumania will be his first true appearance as Kang the Conqueror. Kang is a different type of MCU villain, and with his time-traveling ability and connection to the multiverse, he will be the biggest threat that Ant-Man has faced, even after helping the Avengers defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Reed explained how he knew Majors would be perfect for the role of Kang. He broke down how they worked together to build out Kang's backstory. Reed also teased Majors' acting abilities when playing different Kang variants.

Peyton Reed: When I cast Jonathan in the role? That was it, man. I had my eye on Jonathan because he's been so good for so long. And he's having a moment now, right? But he takes it seriously. He's such a dedicated actor. He has the physicality that Kang needed. He's a conqueror.

But we talked so much about how this guy experienced his time in a loop, not in a straight line; how he's had all these different experiences, and what it’s like to hang out with someone like that. It's scary. And he just got all of that and just ran with it. And of course, for an actor to be able to play the guy, and then another guy and a guy who are variants? They're all technically Kangs, but they're all radically different characters.

How Johnathan Majors Proves His Range With One Role

Kang the Conqueror in his chair in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Kang the Conqueror is unique because of his connection to the multiverse, and there are an infinite number of variants that can be introduced into the MCU. Only two versions have been shown, first in Loki and soon in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but Majors will likely need to bring countless more to life, with each one feeling like their own unique, fully fleshed-out character. And with Kang being the next Avengers-level threat after Thanos, he'll need to bring a new dimension to each villain and their desires.

With Majors being the most consistent voice for Kang both in front of and behind the camera, his collaboration with Reed to craft the character's backstory is instrumental to his performance in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and other MCU projects. His performances as He Who Remains and Kang the Conqueror are vastly different, demonstrating his range as an actor. He Who Remains takes a dark approach, but his intentions seem to be almost protective, even as his interactions with Loki make it clear he has been separated from civilization for a long time. Kang the Conqueror, on the other hand, has gravitas and menace on full display even in the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trailers, as he calmly and almost mockingly talks to Scott about killing Avengers.

While Thanos wiped out half the universe to achieve his goals, what makes Kang so dangerous is that he has the ability to change time and wipe out universes for his own purposes. Now that the door to the multiverse, which He Who Remains had kept closed, has been busted open, Kang's attention will likely be drawn to the MCU's prime universe as a target. Each new Kang that is introduced, beginning with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, will likely come with its own set of dangers, potentially culminating in Avengers: Kang Dynasty with Majors playing multiple Kang variants in the same movie.
