Don't expect Scott Lang's Ant-Man to get wings of his own in Ant-Man & the Wasp. It seems Scott will have to carry on hitching a ride with flying ants if he wants to get airborne while his partner in heroics, Wasp, gets all the really cool tech.

The trailers for Ant-Man & the Wasp have made no secret of the fact that the Wasp has a lot of advanced tech that Hank Pym hasn't made available to Scott Lang. In the first trailer, there's an amusing sequence in which Scott queries just why Wasp gets wings and blasters, when he doesn't. "So I take it you didn't have that tech available for me," he asks. Hank's answer is perfect; "No, I did." The clear implication is that he just didn't want to give Scott that kind of tech.

According to Specialty Costumes Supervisor Ivo Coveney, that's not going to change over the course of the film. Speaking to Screen Rant on our visit to the set, Coveney confirmed that Scott won't be getting any wings of his own by the movie's end. "There isn’t a functional explanation," he noted, "but it is addressed in the film in a humorous way... He's not happy about it."

In truth, this is a smart move on Marvel's part. Ant-Man & the Wasp has been presented as a team-up film, with the two titular heroes acting as "partners." Giving them different tech simply ensures the two characters have differing powersets. What's more, it's not just a case of Hank Pym playing favorites, and giving his daughter all the cool tech. Where Hope has blasters and wings, Ant-Man has the ability to control ants, and so far we've seen no evidence Wasp can grow in size as well as shrink. These different abilities allow each hero to play to their strengths, complementing the other, and making the team work. Naturally, there'll be teething troubles; the trailers have already shown Hope asking why Scott thinks she should hit low, when she's the one with wings!

The reality is that Scott Lang will not be happy to see Hope's technical upgrades. Wasp's wings, in particular, are likely to be a bone of contention, with a jealous Scott dependent on controlling a passing ant in order to keep up. As we've already seen in the trailers, that actually means he nearly winds up becoming a seagull's lunch. Where Hope would be able to duck and dive, Scott seems to have no choice but to ditch the ant and drop into the river.
