Though Bill Foster is a hero in the comics, Laurence's Fishburne's take on Goliath in Ant-Man & the Wasp may be a bit more antagonistic. Marvel is well-known for ramping things up in their sequels when it comes to more characters from the comics. The first Ant-Man certainly featured a few familiar faces, but it also invented a number of characters. The sequel, however, will bring the likes of Ghost, Janet van Dyne, and more to life - alongside Dr. Bill Foster.

Known as the size-changing hero Goliath in the comics, we'll meet Dr. Foster as a peer of Hank Pym's in Ant-Man & the Wasp. We've already seen a poster for Bill Foster, proving he may be a bigger character than his fleeting glimpses in the trailers have let on. Like many of the other new characters, there's still a lot of mystery surrounding Fishburne's role. But what's clear is he won't exactly be a fan of Hank Pym.

During Screen Rant's set visit to Ant-Man & the Wasp, director Peyton Reed weighed in on how much Bill Foster would resemble his comic book counterpart and how the MCU would tweak him into more of an adversary for Hank Pym.

"Bill’s a former colleague who really was involved early on with Pym in a thing called Project Goliath and their lives have taken these kind of divergent paths and when we find Bill Foster in this movie, he is teaching quantum physics at Berkeley. I also liked the idea of grounding -- because the movie takes place in San Francisco and it’s not just for stunts and scenery. Like, Berkeley, that’s an important thing in the movie. Is that one guy is gone -- they were both involved with S.H.I.E.L.D at some point, but one guy’s sort of stepped away and taken a more academic approach."

Bill Foster aka Goliath

It doesn't appear that Foster will be an outright villain, but Ant-Man & the Wasp seems to be a movie filled with antagonists. In the case of the man who was once Goliath, that could simply mean he's a roadblock to the team. Though Foster seems intrigued by Giant-Man in Ant-Man 2, his former rivalry with Pym means his allegiances are unknown.

"I liked the idea from the beginning, especially having Michael and Laurence Fishburne, of these guys who are sort of scientific rivals and when we’re -- that’s really the rivalry and we always talked about sort of a Steve Jobs/Bill Gates kind of thing. Two scientists who are both geniuses in quantum physics and quantum mechanics, but maybe have a Mac/PC rivalry about what the approach to delving into the Quantum Realm might be. So, I also like the idea of with those two actors, especially with Fishburne, like, someone who’s gonna actually go toe-to-toe with Michael in terms of who’s the smartest guy in the room? That struck me as something really fun and you know, to give Hank Pym a foil in this movie in that way."

Whether he turns out to be a hero or not, Fishburne and Douglas sharing the screen should be very entertaining for audiences. Though the former actor plays a part in the DCEU, tackling a classic character like Dr. Foster means we could see a bigger future for him in the MCU. If nothing else, we may get to see the original Goliath in action if a prequel film ever explores the Cold War era of S.H.I.E.L.D. when Foster worked alongside Pym and Janet van Dyne.

Ant-Man 2 is tracking for a huge opening, so a spinoff doesn't seem out of the question. Until then, audiences will get to see plenty of size-changing heroes on the screen when Ant-Man & the Wasp arrives next month.
