Anson Mount exclusively reveals the one Marvel hero he would like to play more than Black Bolt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Inhumans. Based on Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's comics of the same name, the ABC series was originally planned as a film in Phase Three of the MCU before shifting focus on developing it for TV, expected to boost Marvel Television's standing with the network following the cancellation of Agent Carter and passing of Marvel's Most Wanted. The series hailed from Scott Buck, the showrunner of the first season of fellow MCU series Iron Fist at Netflix.

Inhumans revolved around the titular royal family as they are forced to flee to Hawaii amidst a military coup and come up with a plan to save both themselves and the world. The series starred Mount as the family leader Black Bolt alongside Serinda Swan, Ken Leung, Eme Ikwuakor, Isabelle Cornish, Ellen Woglom and Iwan Rheon. Premiering in IMAX theaters and on ABC in late 2017, Inhumans was panned by critics and audiences alike and maintained abysmal ratings across its eight-episode run, being cancelled after just one season and leaving their MCU future uncertain, though one actor is still hopeful to get back into the game one way or another.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for his turn as Batman in Warner Bros.' animated Injustice film, Mount reflected on his Marvel history and thoughts on the future. In looking at potential characters he could bring to life other than Black Bolt, Mount revealed he would love to play Gambit, revealing the X-Men character as his number one Marvel hero he's wanted to play behind the Inhumans leader and his personal ties to Gambit. See what Mount said below:

"If you give me my choice of Marvel characters, I think Black Bolt would have been number two, second only to Gambit. Gambit is just one of the coolest characters in the Marvel universe and obviously I'm partial to him because he's the Southern superhero. He's definitely not one of the more powerful characters if you line them all up facing each other [laughs].

But his wit and his ability to overcome such a dark past and then the far future reaches that Marvel has done with him in terms of the scope of his possible futures, it's just amazing. I think it's a really rich territory and even if it's not with me, I hope Marvel does something with Gambit. Now, I'm probably too old so, you know, there's some people out there that have been calling about Reed Richards, but I don't know. My dance card's a little full right now and so is theirs."

Anson Mount and Iwan Rheon in Marvel's Inhumans

Gambit has become one of the more infamous X-Men characters in the world of the big screen, having seen a divisive reception in his cinematic debut with Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine before a solo film languished in development hell with Channing Tatum set to star for seven years before eventually being shelved following the Fox-Disney merger. With Marvel Studios currently developing an X-Men project set within the MCU, the door is certainly open for Gambit to make his way into Disney's franchise. However, given the former Fox property is still likely years away from hitting screens, the card-throwing hero is unlikely to make his MCU debut anytime soon.

While Inhumans saw a generally poor reception from critics and fans alike, some are still hopeful the galactic race can get another chance in the MCU, especially as rumors began swirling of a reboot, which were supported by Mount. Though an actor portraying a character in the Disney franchise may point towards the door closing for their returns in any other capacity, Gemma Chan's upcoming turn as Sersi in Eternals is proof that should the right creative mind see fit for Mount to make a return, be it as Gambit, Black Bolt or otherwise, it could be done. In the meantime, audiences can look forward to Mount taking on one of DC Comics' most iconic heroes with his performance as Batman in the animated Injustice movie coming out October 19.
