The Oscar-winning film, Another Round, is getting an English-language remake with Leonardo DiCaprio potentially set to star. The Danish film starring Mads Mikkelsen (Rogue One, Hannibal) took home the award for Best International Feature at Sunday's night's Academy Awards at Union Station. After Another Round's win, its writer/director Thomas Vinterberg (who was also nominated in the Best Director category) gave one of the most emotional speeches of the night. Vinterberg dedicated the win to his 19-year-old daughter, Ida, who was the main inspiration behind the film and was set to play the daughter of Mikkelsen's main character, but was tragically killed in a car accident four days into filming.

Another Round, also known as its original title, Druk (Danish for "binge drinking) first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2020.  The film then saw a resurgence in popularity after its two Oscar nominations and subsequent streaming availability on Hulu. Another Round tells the story of four teacher friends in the throes of midlife crises who decide to put psychiatrist Finn Skårderud's theory to the test that maintaining a constant blood alcohol content of .05 makes one more interesting and relaxed. While all four initially find their lives more enjoyable, the experiment eventually gets out of hand.

According to Deadline, Another Round is getting an English-language remake from the Leonardo DiCaprio-owned Appian Way Productions after an intense bidding war that involved production companies owned by Jake Gyllenhaal and Elizabeth Banks. The bidding war unfolded over the past two weeks and concluded with the film's win Sunday night. DiCaprio will likely star in the remake, as the film is reportedly being developed as a "star vehicle" for the Oscar-winning actor.

Mads Mikkelsen in Another Round

While Vinterberg will serve as executive producer, he will not be tapped to write or direct the remake. Since DiCaprio is currently busy filming Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and has a number of potential projects lined up, such as The Black Hand and two other Scorsese's projects in The Devil in the White City and Roosevelt, the star may not be able to fit an Another Round remake into his schedule.

Considering that DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way, won the rights to the film after an intense auction, he likely has some interest in starring in the film. Whether or not DiCaprio decides to star, it will be intriguing to see what an American remake of Another Round has to say about drinking culture.
