Although America and Japan are far apart, they both share a love for epic storytelling. Through North America, fans got to experience the superhero comic book sagas that haev now been prominently translated to screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, in Japan there has been a similar transition with the Manga format that has been brought to life in motion with Anime.

Due to the similarities in style, some characters might have a counterpart from one region to another too. In particular, the antagonists.

Kingpin - Tomura Shigaraki

The Kingpin is the overarching antagonist to Daredevil. Although he wasn't the main antagonist of season 2, he was the main villain during season 1 and 3. One element that made the character memorable is his awful past and the way that he grows in strength throughout Hell's Kitchen.

Similarly, Shigaraki is one of the main antagonists of My Hero Academia. Similar to the Kingpin, he has an awful past that relates to his family. His growth as a villain parallels Deku throughout the story, as Kingpin does with Daredevil.

Kilgrave - Johan Liebert

Kilgrave is the manipulative antagonist of Jessica Jones. His terrifying villainous tendencies are paired with a child-like demeanor, but what truly makes him dangerous is his ability to control the minds of others.

Contrasting this, Johan Liebert is a calm and collected murderer who is able to break the will of others through speaking alone. However, this link of breaking the will of others and haunting their respective protagonists is why these two fit well as counterparts.

Mysterio - Mr 3

Mysterio is the main antagonist of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Although he appeared to be a benevolent hero, it turned out that he was nothing more than a con man who pulls the wool over people's eyes by utilizing film tricks or illusions.

Mr. 3 is an antagonist from One Piece who was a part of Baroque Works, and despite his high rank, he is a coward. However, similar to Mysterio, he is a highly skilled tactician who uses his devil fruit for whatever he desires, essentially creating a more concrete form of Mysterio's dangerous illusions.

Ego - Fused Zamasu

Ego is the father of Starlord and is the main antagonist to Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2. Befitting his name, Ego is a selfish and narcissistic character who is a godlike celestial. Similarly, Fused Zamasu is a character who suffers from a superiority complex and a desire to kill all mortals.

Both characters also wish to rule everything in the way that they desire, even if it meant turning everything into themselves. Ego planned to use seedlings to terraform worlds and become extensions of himself, while Zamasu became a reality-encompassing entity.

Hela - Ragyo Kiryuin

The main villains of their respective franchises, both Hela and Ragyo Kiryuin share a biological connection with their protagonist, asH ela is the sister of Thor, while Ragyo is the mother of Ryuko.

Both characters are powerful and are ruthless to any adversary that comes against them. This has resulted in these characters being arrogant, and they start to falter when their respective relatives started to gather enough power to fight them.

Helmut Zemo - Shogo Makishima

Helmut Zemo is the main antagonist of Captain America: Civil War, and unlike other characters in the universe, he doesn't have any powers. Instead, he utilizes his intelligence in order to manipulate events around him, whether it is using the accords to his advantage or the deteriorating relationship between Iron Man and Captain America to shake up the superhero community.

Shogo Makishima is similar in that he is outside of the sibyl system in Psycho-Pass, which allows him access to shake up Tokyo from within.

Killmonger - Sasuke Uchiha

MCU's Killmonger and Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto

The core element that Killmonger and Sasuke Uchiha share is their anger, which stems from the tragic past. Both characters lost their family members and use their anger in order to fight against their respective families, Killmonger with Wakanda and Sasuke with Konoha.

The difference lies in where they both ended up, with Killmonger being defeated by his cousin while Sasuke redeems himself and becomes a protector of the leaf village.

Loki - DIO

MCU's Loki and DIO from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Loki and DIO are characters who have a god complex who just happened to also be adopted by more benevolent parents, with Loki being adopted by Odin while DIO is adopted by the Joestar family.

Both characters fight against their superior 'brothers' and have a connection with the cold, as Loki is a frost giant while DIO is a vampire. However, despite their great abilities, they are always defeated by the family that adopts them.

Ultron - Cell

MCU's Ultron and Cell from Dragon Ball Z

The dangerous link that Ultron and Cell share together is the reason for their creation. Cell is a biological android who was designed to kill Goku and the rest of his friends, while Ultron was intended to be a safeguard against future threats gone wrong.

Yet despite this, they both share characteristics to those that they both respectively oppose and they have also caused strife to their targets. However, they both eventually got defeated by their own means, whether it was causing Gohan to be angry or Ultron creating Vision.

Thanos - Aizen

MCU's Thanos and Aizen from Bleach

The main antagonist of the Infinity Saga, Thanos is a dangerous conqueror who believes that he is saving the universe, all by wiping out 50% of the universe's population with a snap. However, beneath that, Thanos is an arrogant and terrifying threat that required everyone to fight him.

Meanwhile, Aizen is one of the main antagonists of Bleach, who is similar to Thanos in that they both lead their respective armies or teams with strength and fear.
