Nintendo has announced a series of crossovers to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. and one such crossover includes Mario-themed furniture landing on the islands of Animal Crossing: New Horizons' players' islands. While previous Animal Crossing titles had Super Mario furniture included from the get-go, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has taken a different approach adding items to the game via updates.

Super Mario Bros. was released in 1985 making this year the series' 35th anniversary. Nintendo opened the flood gates today to reveal a slew of Mario titles and crossovers to celebrate the mustachioed hero's big milestone. An entire library of classic Super Mario titles is making its way on to the Nintendo Switch, including a collection of some of the best 3D Mario games. Nintendo also announced a series of crossovers with games like Splatoon 2 and brands such as PUMA each offering physical merchandise that gamers can wear with pride. But the fun doesn't stop there.

The official Nintendo UK Twitter announced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons players could expect to see Mario-themed furniture next year. The update adding the furniture will arrive next March, but a specific date was not given, however, it was mentioned that the update is in celebration of Mario's 35th anniversary. This leads players to believe that the crossover will come in the form of an event and not just the addition of items.

Previous Animal Crossing titles included a plethora of Nintendo-themed items from a number of different franchises which is one aspect of the series that Animal Crossing: New Horizons seemed to be missing. For example, Animal Crossing: New Leaf had over 50 different Nintendo items from franchises including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, and Metroid. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has zero, but that is about to change thanks to this upcoming event.

While the Animal Crossing X Super Mario crossover is specifically focused on Mario, it would be nice to see Nintendo add other franchises back into the mix. With 2021 being the 35th anniversary for The Legend of Zelda franchise, maybe the company is also planning an Animal Crossing: New Horizons event for that milestone. Regardless, islanders will be able to cosplay as their favorite mustachioed plumbers while collecting mushrooms and fire flowers come March 2021.
