Animal Crossing: New Horizons' 2.0 update and Happy Home Paradise expansion allow players to polish furniture in the game with creative effects, but the best option is unlocked last. Players can choose to shine items inside vacation homes on the Archipelago for visiting villagers or burnish the quarters of their citizens back on the main island. This feature allows for animated effects to be placed on furniture to create the perfect atmosphere. Only after unlocking all 14 polishing options in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, will players be able to add their custom designs to the animations.

Happy Home Paradise is necessary to obtain polishing and is included in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass or can be purchased separately. After traveling to the Archipelago, players will be tasked with creating vacation homes for the game's villagers that wish to take a break from their daily lives. There is, practically, no end to the time that can be spent renovating the best houses, since lodging can be designed for all 400 plus villagers in New Horizons. After creating the fourth residence, players will learn how to polish furniture and add sparkles to the home.

As more vacation homes are designed, further animations are added to the polishing feature. Each effect is varied and dramatically changes the inside of houses. There are 14 different animations to choose from when polishing furniture. Players gain the ability to assign custom designs to each polishing effect in Animal Crossing after obtaining the last default animation. This feature is unlocked after designing the restaurant or cafe, either can be chosen first, which becomes an option only by renovating 12 vacation homes. The ability to use custom designs when polishing is acquired a fair way into the DLC, which was not mentioned in the trailers for Happy Home Paradise.

Animal Crossing Custom Designs Make Default Polish Animations Obsolete

Animal Crossing Polish Effect Animated Fires & Ghosts

After unlocking the customized polishing feature, there is very little reason to ever use most of the default animations. Players can create some amazing rooms with the fantastic designs of the Animal Crossing community. By scanning QR Codes using the Nintendo Switch Online phone app, or accessing the machine in the Able Sisters shop, custom creations can be downloaded and applied to any of the 14 animations for polishing in New Horizons. Stunning designs can be found to set a room on fire, create a haunted graveyard, or make cherry blossoms drop from a tree. The custom polishing feature breathes life into the game and adds a new outlet for self-expression.

Shining the furniture for other villagers, or inside players' own houses, can be a great way for players to spread their imagination. The custom polish effects are game-changing and a pleasant surprise after obtaining all the default animations. While it takes time for players to be able to use their own designs for polishing in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, this feature helps to make everyone's island more unique.
