Furniture gets a new way to shine in the Happy Home Paradise DLC for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In addition to picking and placing furniture, players can now polish it to give it new, animated effects. It's pretty easy to do, and the effects can last a while.

Polishing furniture in Animal Crossing: New Horizons gives it a shiny effect that appears as some white sparkles that float around the item. The more players polish an item, the longer this effect with last, which makes every home just that much cleaner and newer-looking. Players can unlock this skill early in their Happy Home Paradise experience. All players have to do is get started on the new DLC's signature activity: designing vacation homes.

The process of acquiring the polishing skill starts the moment players download Animal Crossing'Happy Home Paradise DLC. Tom Nook will call players after they download the DLC, and they will appear at the airport to be introduced to Lottie. Lottie is the NPC that kicks off Animal Crossing's DLC by hiring players to design vacation homes, and they can take a flight from the airport to the island to start their new job. Vacation home design adds a ton of new items and decorations to the base game, as well as the ability to polish furniture.

Once on the island, players can start designing vacation homes. After designing a few homes, and gaining some experience, players can go to the office and find Wardell, one of the Animal Crossing NPCs added in the DLC. If players have designed enough homes, usually about three or four, Wardell will be dressed in cleaners' clothes and will tell the player that one of his hobbies is polishing furniture when everyone is out of the office. After this interaction, players have successfully triggered a polishing interaction that will take place in the next home they design.

After designing their next home, players will see Niko walk in and tell them to polish the furniture. Players can then change into cleaning clothes by pressing L, and they can only polish when in this outfit. Once the clothes are on, players can hold the A button to polish a piece of furniture while they are standing in front of it. Holding A down longer will extend the duration of the status effect.

If players feel a bit overwhelmed by all the sparkles floating around, they can tap A in front of a polished item to remove the effect and clear the air. After this interaction, players can polish furniture at will to make sure every home they design shines as bright as possible. Eventually, it may even be possible for players to polish furniture around their island home in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
