According to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold incredibly well. Many expected the new Animal Crossing to have a strong debut, but few were anticipating that it would be one of Nintendo's biggest launches of all time. However, according to NPD's Mat Piscatella, that's exactly what happened.

As recently announced on Twitter, The NPD group has released its figures for March 2020, and – as expected – Animal Crossing: New Horizons had the strongest sales figures for the month, not including digital sales. But the sales were stronger than anyone could have predicted, and the game has already shot up the annual charts to become the second-highest selling video game of 2020, behind only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. And that's without digital tracking, while Call of Duty's digital sales are included in NPD data. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch sold more units in March 2020 than it did in March 2017, the handheld console's launch month.

While exact sales figures for Animal Crossing: New Horizons were not divulged by the NPD, Nintendo does have a policy of releasing exact sales figures at regular intervals, so Animal Crossing enthusiasts will eventually have the opportunity to learn just how impressive New Horizon's performance truly is. Already, Animal Crossing has proven itself one of Nintendo's most important franchises, with its launch being the third-largest in Nintendo history, following only the Wii and Switch iterations of the crossover fighting series, Super Smash Brothers. Depending on how the game performs in the coming months, Animal Crossing: New Horizons may become one of the top-selling Switch games of all time by the end of the year.
