It turns out that residents on Animal Crossing: New Horizons islands do not accept trash gifts on their birthdays, and they will supply the ultimate burn to let gamers know if a gift is not up to their expectations. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been one of gaming’s biggest successes this year. The wholesome escapism it provides garnered Nintendo’s life simulation title a nomination for several accolades at this years Game Awards.
One of the most popular parts of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is all the charming and anthropomorphic animals that move onto the player’s island. Gamers can interact with their residents with a variety of reactions and gestures, one of which includes the pure act of gift giving. Unfortunately for one Reddit user, though, this token of community spirit was met with a rather scathing response by an Animal Crossing resident.
Intergalactic_Raptor shared a picture of their Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ avatar presenting birthday girl Blanche with their present to her. Rather than graciously accepting her gift, the notoriously snooty ostrich instead delivered an absolute cracker of a putdown. On receiving Intergalactic_Raptor’s birthday present of an old boot, Blanche declares that she is not “a recycling bin” and told Intergalactic_Raptor to “take this backand get out my sight.” Ouch!
While this put down from Blanche may well be the most savage thing that fans have witnessed in the latest Animal Crossing game from Nintendo, it may come as a surprise to newcomers that previous titles in the series contained a much meaner streak. Residents from the Game Cube version of Animal Crossing could throw some serious shade at players and fellow locals, including calling others an “utter waste.” Meanwhile, those in the DS’ Animal Crossing: Wild World would leave harsh notes on the community boards to announce their departure from town.
Having an Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ island inhabited by Nintendo’s more desirable residents is a far more appealing prospect than one full of disgruntled inhabitants. Villagers such as Clyde the lazy horse are seldom wanted to be kept on islands by fans of Animal Crossing. Instead, characters such as the devious but adorable squirrel Marshal and Bob the purple feline have kept a special place in the hearts of gamers, and are often sought out by fans. Perhaps Intergalactic_Raptor was trying to give Blanche a subtle message that it is time to move on with their presentation of an old boot, hopeful to make way for a more amiable and appreciative tenant.
