There have been secret villager conversations in Animal Crossing: New Horizons lying under player’s noses since launch, and only during the month where players are getting dressed up for the holiday have players discovered them.

Villager interactions in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are very similar to how they were in past games. There are eight different villager personalities that neighbors can potentially have, each of which being unique in their dialogue. However, the conversations villagers have in New Horizons often aren't as varied as past games like Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Villagers do still ask players to do favors, but they only do so when they approach the player or when they have a thought bubble over their head as opposed to normally bringing it up in conversation. The same applies for changing villagers catchphrases or giving them a new greeting. This results in conversations often repeating themselves when even interacting with the best villagers, which can potentially dampen the gameplay experience in a game that heavily encourages befriending animal neighbors.

It’s now discovered that animal neighbors will react to certain costumes that players wear. Redditor MagicDolls posted several screenshots of animals reacting to how the human character dress up. The examples being shown were of the villager in a rabbit costume and a frog costume. Villagers will take notice of said costume and give reactions according to their personality. Animals will even react if villagers dress up as the same type of animal as them. A comment also claims that Mable, one of the owners of the Able Sisters reacted to the player wearing a detective's hat and coat.

This year’s Halloween has been a treat for Animal Crossing players. Not only has the month of October provided lots of new items that further add to the customization, the community has been very active in making all sorts of fan creations for the holiday, be it parodies or unique designs. The Able Sisters has provided a variety of new clothing items to celebrate the season, while Nook's Cranny has been selling furniture in the Spooky series and candy, the latter of which will be used on Halloween night to trade with villagers.

This new unique secret within New Horizons brings some much needed variety to the writing that the game offers. The quality of the writing itself was never bad, but there just wasn't enough material to work with for the dialogue. Now, players can create some hilarious scenarios in which they can interact with frog villagers in a frog costume, and the frog villager will react accordingly. It shows that there's still plenty to be discovered from the ever popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
