A stubborn Animal Crossing: New Horizons player recently figured out that one can actually stay inside of Nook's Cranny after business hours just by sitting on the ground. Players of Nintendo's life simulation title are still pushing the boundaries of what can be done in-game even after New Horizons celebrated its one-year anniversary back in March.
Nook's Cranny has become a staple for the Animal Crossing franchise as it is usually the place where series regular Tom Nook operates from. At this establishment, players can purchase items that assist in customizing properties, such as tools and furniture, or they can sell unwanted objects. Like any business in the real world, Nook's Cranny has set hours of operation and these can vary from game to game. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, business hours run from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and if a player happens to be in the store at closing time, they are politely asked to leave.
Reddit user katemonkey, however, realized that there is a way around getting kicked out of Nook's Cranny at closing time. If the player simply sits on the ground before the clock strikes 10 p.m. and stays seated, they will not be removed from the premises. Katemonkey provided some screenshots that showcase their character joyfully performing civil disobedience while Tom Nook's "nephews," Timmy and Tommy, look on in complete helplessness.
It is a little surprising that such a simple yet amusing exploit was discovered over a year after Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched. One question that was not answered by katemonkey's experiment, however, is if that method will work through the whole night until the store opens again. There is always a possibility another player will try to pull off that feat, but doing so will require a lot of time and patience.
As benign as this exploit is, there may be an underlying motive for katemonkey's actions. Over the years, Animal Crossing fans have loving expressed their frustrations with the character of Tom Nook and the double life many are convinced he lives. The tanuki has sometimes been compared to a crime boss and even called downright evil for some of his practices. These accusations greatly contrast with the cute, lovable creature Nintendo presents in their Animal Crossing series, but that might just be what Tom Nook wants us to think. If there is an Animal Crossing: New Horizons player daring enough to spend the whole night in Nook's Cranny, that might be the thing that finally makes the tanuki show his true colors.
