The Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 update and DLC Happy Home Paradise have been live for almost a month now, but players are still discovering new features, including the ability to reset starter villagers' houses. All this content has provided plenty of new ways to play the game, including an entirely new gameplay scenario through Happy Home Paradise. With thousands of new items and customization options, New Horizons feels almost new again.

One of the best new additions is the ability to reset a starter villager’s house to its default interior. When a player first begins their Animal Crossing: New Horizons journey, they have to build three plots on their islands and bring in villagers to live in them. These three villagers and the two that the player arrives on the island with are called starter villagers. All five of these starter villagers will have starter houses, which are generic across all islands and are different from each character’s default house.

These starter houses can be rather empty and without any personality, so it is unsurprising why players would want to get rid of them. Before the addition of Happy Home Paradise, the only way to get an Animal Crossing villager’s original house would be to remove them from the island and re-invite them later on. Fortunately, there is a hidden feature within the DLC that allows players to fix this problem with a simple click of a button.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Villager House Reset

A major feature of the Animal Crossing DLC was the ability to redecorate villager houses on the player’s home island. It was revealed later on that the player would need to build up a reputation as a designer by playing the DLC in order to do this. And while completely redecorating these houses is still an option, there is another, much quicker option. In order to change a starter villager’s interior, players will simply need to speak to Isabelle to complain about the Animal Crossing villager in question. Then the player will need to select the “the way their home looks” option. And that’s it! The house will be instantly reset from the starter version to the default house interior.

As with redecorating villager houses, being able to reset starter homes is also locked behind progression in Happy Home Paradise. Players will need to decorate 30 houses at the archipelago resort as well as the Apparel Shop to unlock this feature. Essentially, players will have to finish the DLC before they can decorate villager houses on their own island. This feature is also only available through Happy Home Paradise and not Animal Crossing: New Horizons' 2.0 update, meaning it has to be purchased through the Nintendo eShop on its own or bundled with the Nintendo Online Expansion Pass.
