Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been something of a work in progress ever since its release, but the new 2.0 update will be bringing substantial new content to the game, including new crops to farm like tomatoes, potatoes, and wheat. Fairly regular updates have brought more features, both new and returning from older AC titles, but New Horizons' upcoming 2.0 update is slated to be the largest content drop by far. Releasing alongside the Happy Home Paradise paid DLC, the 2.0 update will be New Horizons' final free update, bringing many requested features to the game, including the expanded crop farming and a cooking feature.

Growing crops is a common gameplay component in various simulation games like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon, but Animal Crossing has largely left farming out of its repertoire. It wasn't until last year that growing any sort of crops was added to New Horizons as part of its Fall Update.  The caveat, though, is that the mechanic was exclusive to pumpkins. With the 2.0 update coming November 5, even more crops will be growable, with additional DIY recipes providing the opportunity to turn garden fresh crops into meals.

The new crops will likely operate similarly to the pumpkins, with their seeds and starts available during certain seasons from Nook's Cranny, and year round from Leif. Luckily for those looking to start an extensive farm, Leif will be one of the traveling merchants getting their own permanent shop at Harv's Island Market. This means a quick flight with Dodo Airlines is all it'll take to stock up on seeds, provided players have paid the adequate number of Bells to build Leif's stall.

New Crops Confirmed For New Horizons' 2.0 Update

Animal Crossing's new crops can be made into dishes

So far, there have only been five crops confirmed to be arriving in the new Animal Crossing update, but there will be more than these:

  • Tomatoes
  • Wheat
  • Sugarcane
  • Potatoes
  • Carrots

A few glimpses at recipes in the Animal Crossing Direct reveal how the crops will be used, and what kind of dishes players can expect to make with them. Five wheat can be turned into a bag of flour, two of which - alongside one tomato, and one carrot - will be used to make a veggie sandwich. Minestrone soup and mushroom salad are the other two recipes that showed up in the Direct.

Luckily for those with islands in the Northern hemisphere, mushroom season is in November, when the update is dropping. Players in the Southern hemisphere will have to wait until May for mushrooms to appear on their island. Becoming a chef with the DIY Recipes+ item in Animal Crossing: New Horizons only requires a small entry fee of 2,000 Nook Miles, most likely a pittance to those who have been diligently playing since the game came out.
