An observant Animal Crossing: New Horizons player recently discovered a very creepy detail in one of the game's decorative wallpapers. Nintendo's social simulation title creates a harmless, wholesome environment where players can design and build their own island community. Despite the series' reputation as a warm and welcoming platform, some creepy Animal Crossing: New Horizons builds can transform the game into an unsettling and even scary experience

As an adorable social simulation, Animal Crossing: New Horizons immerses players in their own private island and introduces them to a huge host of animal neighbors. The non-linear title allows players to customize their player character before dropping them on a deserted island with only the bare essentials of survival. Players can craft items and structures by collecting resources, with progressive improvements eventually leading to the construction of a thriving community of villagers. A multitude of customization options let gamers decorate their village as they see fit, with the recent Happy Home Paradise expansion adding even more ways to customize. While most of this decor fits with the game's peaceful aesthetic, a graveyard wallpaper in Animal Crossing: New Horizons hides a very disturbing secret.

Reddit user SAUbjj recently discovered a creepy Easter egg hidden in Animal Crossing: New Horizons' graveyard wallpaper. The design itself is creepy with the lights on, portraying a misty graveyard in the middle of the woods. However, turning the lights off makes things worse by causing an ominous ghost to appear on a random section of the wall. The digital ghoul disappears when the lights are turned on, but turning them back off again makes it reappear on another part of the wall. While this is creepy by itself, SAUbjj makes things worse by pointing out that the ghost actually gets closer and closer to the player each time it reappears.

The graveyard wallpaper in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is undoubtedly creepy, but most of the wallpapers in the game are actually quite pleasant. For example, the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Aurora wallpaper was used by one player to recreate beautiful hotels in the Finnish Lapland. The colorful decor emulates the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, a natural phenomenon that makes colorful light dance across the sky. Some northern hotels include massive windows, allowing travelers to view the breathtaking lightshow from the comfort of their room, and the Aurora wallpaper is used to translate this custom into Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

By adding a bit of horror to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the graveyard wallpaper serves as a surprising and unsettling piece of decoration. The fact that the ghostly Easter egg is hidden, rather than out in the open, only adds to the creepiness. While many Animal Crossing fans will likely avoid the disturbing design, some gamers will no doubt gravitate towards the ominous ghostly presence.
