The new summer update of Animal Crossing: New Horizons has arrived, bringing the new swimming and diving activities as well as new content and collectibles for players to enjoy. Players can now purchase a Wetsuit from Nook's Cranny or Resident Services for 3,000 bells to explore the ocean around their island home and collect brand new sea creatures. They can also use their Wetsuit to help special characters. One of these characters is the seagull, Gulliver and his pirate counterpart, Gullivarrr. Gulliver sports a sailor's outfit and appears randomly washed up on a player's island after getting lost while traveling. Players will need to help him get back in contact with his crew by finding five missing parts of his broken communicator scattered around the island's beaches. He will reward the player with a new item or collectible from a different world culture.

Gullivarrr, on the other hand, is a pirate who has lost his crew and become washed up on a player's island. Players will need to dive to find his communicator, and, once players help him regain contact with his crew, he will reward them with one of many pirate-themed items or collectibles. Both Gulliver and Gullivarrr will appear on rotation every one or two weeks, so players can repeat the same process to help them and earn new rewards from each item series. Helping Gullivarrr is also a fun way to explore the oceans and the new diving mechanic. Here's how to help Gullivarrr find his communicator and get back to his crew.

How to Find Gullivarrr in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

While players should be able to easily find Gulliver once they have installed the new summer update and begun playing for a few days, they may have a harder time finding Gullivarrr. Gullivarrr washes up randomly on one of the beaches on a player's island starting at 5 a.m., and he will be there only until the next day.

While Gulliver will begin appearing almost immediately after players download the update, Gullivarrr will only appear after players have purchased a Wetsuit. Players should plan to search the beaches each day to find the bird. For players who really want to access all the reward items right away, time traveling in the game forces Gullivarrr to appear more often.

The best chance of finding Gullivarrr is on a weekday, though there are exceptions to this. It appears he will still sometimes wash up on the weekends, so players should always keep an eye on their shores.

Like his regular sailor counterpart, Gullivarrr is difficult to rouse once he appears passed out on the beach. Players will want to keep trying to talk to him until he comes to. Some players have taken to hitting him, usually with a net, until he wakes up fully. It is not certain whether there are any negative consequences to this as there might be with villagers.

How to Find Gullivarrr's Communicator in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

A player dives into the ocean wearing a wetsuit in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Players will need to find Gullivarrr's Communicator, which looks like a NookPhone, to help him get back to his crew and ship. It seems Gullivarrr loses his communicator underwater, so players will have to dive for it. Just like diving for new sea creatures, players should wait until they see bubbles coming to the surface and a fairly small shadow. For Communicators, it seems there won't usually be very many bubbles, and, unlike sea creatures, the shadow won't move much.

Players will want to press Y to dive down and retrieve an item when they see something under the surface that could be the Communicator. There is a chance they will still come up with a sea creature, so they may need to dive a few times before they retrieve what they're looking for. Players should keep trying until they find it.

Once they have it, players will need to return the Communicator to Gullivarrr, who will thank them. He should be able to get in contact with his crew and leave the island. He will send a reward to the player's mailbox the following day.

Players should know they do not have to return the Communicator to Gullivarrr. Players may keep it in their inventory until he leaves the next morning. When they check their inventory again, they will find 5 Rusted Parts in place of the Communicator, which can be used in more exclusive DIY recipes like those in the Robot Hero item series.

Rewards for Finding Gullivarrr's Communicator in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Gullivarrr gives players who help him one of 19 pirate-themed items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Gullivarrr will send players any one of 19 special pirate-themed furniture items, clothing and collectibles for their help finding his Communicator. Players will find this reward item in their mailbox one day after helping Gullivarrr. Players who have already begun seeking out Gullivarrr multiple times note that he will typically send a new item each time and tends not to send duplicates of the same until the player has collected all 19 items, so players interested in collecting them all will have a better chance to do so. The pirate items include:

  • Pirate Barrel
  • Pirate Ship Canon
  • Pirate Ship Helm
  • Pirate Treasure Chest
  • Pirate Wall
  • Pirate Flooring
  • Pirate Rug
  • Sideways Pirate Barrel
  • Sea Captain's Coat in Black, Red, and Blue
  • Pirate Pants
  • Pirate Dress in Black, Red, and Blue
  • Pirate Outfit in Black, Red, and Blue
  • Pirate Treasure Robe
  • Pirate Bandanna in Black, Red, and Blue
  • Pirate Treasure Crown
  • Pirate's Hat
  • Pirate Beard
  • Pirate Eye Patch
  • Pirate Boots

The Sea Captain's Coat, Pirate Dress, Pirate Outfit, and Pirate Bandanna will arrive in one of three colors. They are not customizable, but players can collect all the different variations once they have collected all 19 unique items.

In addition to these items, Gullivarrr also leaves behind one Rusted Part in the Recycle bin at Resident Services when he visits. Players should be sure to stop by and grab that, as these parts are quite useful for crafting hard-to-get DIY items.

One of the new items for the summer is the DIY Golden Shovel recipe. To earn this, players must help either Gullivarrr or his regular sailor counterpart, Gulliver, a total of 30 times. At that point, one of them will send the player the recipe. Players will also receive a Nook Miles Achievement that will help them keep track of how many times they have helped both birds.
