An Animal Crossing fan has created clay art that brings a Gyroid to the real world. Known for sitting outside the player’s house in Nintendo’s open-ended sim, the Gyroid offers many uses besides just being a decoration. From teaching it special messages to using it to sell items to other players, the Gyroid is as functional as it is entertaining with its funny sounds and wiggles.

Last month’s Animal Crossing update featured Gyroids, cooking, and farming among its new features. Before the update, players only had one lone Gyroid, Lloid, for interaction, but now the Gyroid population has grown, especially with the added Gyroid fragment feature. Longtime Animal Crossing players may be aware that the Gyroids are based on the Haniwa, terracotta clay figures created for ritual use as part of ancient Japanese history. The connection between Gyroid and Haniwa appeared to have inspired one creative fan to create a clay version of the special character.

Reddit user LoafyCrumble uses Animal Crossing clay art to bring a Gyroid to the real world and shared his artwork with the game’s subreddit community. Like the Haniwa creators of old, LoafyCrumble used clay to make his own purple-hued Gyroid, complete with a cone-head and a beard. The inspiration for the beard came courtesy of the Gyroid’s creator having one himself. LoafyCrumble isn’t the only creative Gyroid fan to be inspired to craft real-life versions of the rhythmic characters. Recently, an Animal Crossing fan crafted realistic crocheted Gyroids with their own unique patterns.

LoafyCrumble’s Gyroid is more unique, with his creation not being a real-life model of any of the gyroid varieties currently present in the game. The uniqueness and great detail put into the Gyroid garnered a large number of positive critiques from Reddit users. One fan stated that since LoafyCrumble has created his own Haniwa, his soul will be protected once he goes to the great beyond. The majority of the Gyroid’s body was crafted on a pottery wheel. Once the body’s shape was trimmed, handmade arms were attached.

Dubbed “LoafyCrumbleoid” by one Reddit user, the crafted Gyroid looks like a hybrid of a Flutteroid and a Xylophoid, with its purple skin and the structure of its face and body. LoafyCrumble is also a fan of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and to that end he has created artwork based on the game. Coincidentally, Version 13.0.1 patch notes for Smash Bros. Ultimate were recently released by Nintendo, marking the final update to the long-running fighting game. The end of support for this beloved fighter may inspire further fan projects as players pay respects to the game. Meanwhile, fans of Animal Crossing will hopefully have more pieces of Gyroid art now that these long-running clay creatures have appeared in the game. Maybe a clay version of Mr. Resetti can serve as a companion piece for the next clay Gyroid to remind players of the proper way to save their Animal Crossing gameplay.
