Decorating comes in many forms when playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons. By collecting different household items such as chairs, beds, dressers, and even TVs, players can perfect their Animal Crossing home designs. However, there are other ways to make an island town beautiful. This includes fruit trees, outdoor decorations, and a large variety of flowers. Collecting every kind of flower in each color variation can be an undertaking for an Animal Crossing: New Horizons fan, and can take a great deal of time to accomplish.

Currently, there are 8 different types of flowers available in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. These include Lilies, Cosmos, Tulips, Mums, Hyacinths, Windflowers, Pansies, and Roses. Each flower type comes in a variety of colors. Every Animal Crossing island spawns with a primary and secondary flower type. The primary flower type is the flower players find actively growing on their home islands, and the secondary is the flower type always found during Mystery Island tours, as well as in seed packs sold at Nook's Cranny or Leif's Flower Shop. To gather the other flower types, players will need to travel to a friends' islands and visit their stores, or hope to stumble on rare flowers while visiting Mystery Islands.

While finding every flower type can be achieved through travel, gathering every color won't be as simple. Animal Crossing: New Horizons' flowers each have between 6 and 9 colors to collect, but many of the hues require flower breeding. Flower breeding requires dedication and strategy to obtain special color options like the Blue Roses or Purple Pansies. Flowers come in two breeding types: The Seed Pack flower, and the Hybrid Flower. Seed pack flowers can be purchased at Nook's Cranny. To obtain Hybrid flowers, Seed Pack flowers must be bred. However, breeding requires a special planting pattern, otherwise, the flowers will clone instead of reproducing as hybrids, leading to a large number of the same color of flowers taking over the island.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Flower Breeding Setup

To successfully breed Animal Crossing: New Horizons flower colors, players will want to create special flower gardens. The flower colors planted will change based on what color the player is breeding for. The two most commonly used types of breeding gardens are the checkerboard and the diamond patterns. This allows the flowers to be touching at the corners but creates gaps for the new flowers to grow. According to information provided by Paleh's ACNH Flower Genetics Guide, there are other types of planting methods that can be used, but the 5X5 checkerboard can be the easiest when learning flower breeding.

Breeding flowers is a complex task for Animal Crossing fans because flowers have genetic traits in the game. The flowers players can grow with seeds are genetically unable to produce certain offspring colors, as where hybrids possess the genetic information that allows new colors to spawn. However, growing these colors won't require a degree in biology or complicated Punnett square charts. Thanks to information compiled by the community, breeding is much less frustrating than it could be.
