Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers many new customization options for players to explore with the new Happy Home Paradise DLC, including adding bug effects to the exterior of a vacation home. Players can unlock these effects after completing certain steps in their careers as home designers. The ability will be given by Nat, an NPC who was previously only available to visit with an Amiibo card in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Nat has appeared in previous Animal Crossing titles as the bug collector who hosted the Bug-Off event. He would ask players to catch and bring him bugs, then rate them based on rarity, size, color, and luster. Nat was featured in Animal Crossing: City Folk and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Nat now appears on the beach in the Happy Home Paradise DLC.

In order to unlock the bug effects, players will first need to advance their home designer careers and build a school. After completing enough vacation homes and playing for multiple days, players can find Nat wandering around on the beach at the resort. He paces back and forth until the player approaches him, then asks to be directed to the school. Once at the school, Nat will teach the player how to add bugs to the exterior of vacation homes to further customize the atmosphere around the house.

How to Unlock Bugs as Decorations in ACNH Happy Home Paradise DLC

ACNH Vacation Home Exterior with Bugs

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has many new customization options included in the Happy Home Paradise DLC. Using bugs, players can add an additional layer of special effects to the exterior of a vacation home. For example, players can add butterflies to a picnic- or garden-themed home, or put fireflies around the yard at a home that is set to nighttime. Players can also release any bug that they catch in a client's yard.

To add bugs, players need to access their pockets while designing a home. Any available bugs will be highlighted, and choosing one will give the option to release it. However, players can't catch the bugs the traditional way once they're released. To reclaim a bug, players should open their inventory, then access the bug menu in the top left corner with the interact button. A total of 12 bugs can be released on a property, and they can be swapped with others when remodeling.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons' DLC includes the option to customize the exterior of a vacation home with a curated collection of bugs. Clients who request nature, garden, or picnic themes can benefit from the addition of bugs in their yards. Unlocking this effect is as simple as finding and speaking to Nat at the resort while working. Players can use this and other customization options, like changing the time of day or weather, to create the perfect dream home for their clients.
