An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player recently revealed that NPC villagers will actually complain about players who move out from the island. The animal inhabitants of Nintendo’s popular social simulation game are known for their interesting and comical interactions with players. The open-ended gameplay allows for all types of activities, including departing from any given Animal Crossing island if and when the need arises.

Along with all the different activities that players can involve themselves in, such as fishing and decorating, Animal Crossing’s colorful characters also add to the game’s charm.  Befriending the game's quirky villagers opens all sorts of possibilities for fun interactions, such as socializing and playing games. Recent updates have introduced players to new villagers and new features, such as changing Animal Crossing’s starter villagers' home interiors.

Recently, a Reddit post from user markliew shows that villagers in Animal Crossing will complain about players who move out from the island before they themselves leave. The post, which has received over 2,000 upvotes on the game’s subreddit, shows three villagers voicing their concerns to markliew’s playable human character. Tabby, the cat villager who has been a longtime mainstay of the videogame series, voices her frustration by referring to a player who convinced her to move to the island but left before she arrived. Upon discovering the player had left, Tabby worried they were captured by aliens, got lost, or became a ghost.

The next Animal Crossing villager to roast a player for departing the island is series regular Lily. The friendly frog villager begins her dialogue by stating that she, too, was convinced by a player to move to the island. And, just like Tabby, Lily learned the player moved away after her arrival. Being the amicable frog that she is, however, Lily cheerfully thanks markliew’s character for listening, rather than venting any frustrations. Additionally, markliew uploaded screenshots of Dizzy the elephant villager, who states the player that invited him was supposed to be a resident - but must have left if they actually were one.

Presently, there are over 400 characters after Animal Crossing: New Horizons' latest update, meaning this number indicates how many characters can amount to varying degrees of displeasure over the abrupt exits of those who invited them to live on their island. Hopefully the items from the Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2021 Holiday update leak will be enough to cure the villagers’ blues brought on by players bidding adieu before their move-ins.
