A recent report suggests that Android 12 could bring a plethora of new color choices with it, potentially providing smartphone users with greater customization control than ever before. Android 12 is still some time away, with the standard Android OS release cycle indicating that it won't be available until Fall 2021. When it does arrive, though, it could usher in an aesthetically unique operating system for Android users.

The current theming system for Android phones allows users to choose an accent color that's reflected in different areas of the settings. There's also the opportunity to switch Android phones between a light and dark theme to improve visibility when browsing the device in environments with varying degrees of light. Beyond that, however, there has not been a wide range of ways to change up the theming system (without heavy modification) to match the specific tastes of different users.

According to a report by 9to5 Google, Android 12 will change that. Based on the information, Android 12 might incorporate a native theming system that lets users pick both a primary and accent color for their smartphone. Better yet, those colors won't be limited to certain parts of a device's settings. It has been suggested that Android 12's new theme colors will be made available to developers of Android apps, allowing them to better match the color scheme adopted by the rest of the Android device. Finally, it appears that Android 12 will give the option of automatically choosing theme colors based on the device's current wallpaper.

An Android 12 Benefit For Everyone

Arguably, many smartphone users might never think to play around with color schemes, opting for the default theme instead. After all, many smartphone users are probably more worried about productivity and performance than the way certain aspects of the experience looks. However, this potentially new Android 12 feature still offers significant benefits. Whether smartphone users realize it or not, the ability for third-party apps to integrate with the theme and color scheme of the device will almost certainly improve the overall experience. Users will be able to enjoy a consistent aesthetic when navigating between different apps and services on their phone. Even for those that view their smartphone as nothing more than a productivity tool, Android 12 may still result in a more seamless and cohesive experience overall.

There are some hurdles along the way, however. Third-party apps will have to do the legwork on their end to take the colors made available by Android and make them compatible with the theming system. More importantly, Android 12 will actually need to have this feature when it comes out, and since it's yet to be officially confirmed, there are no guarantees. If both do end up happening, the new feature is sure to improve the way users interact with their Android smartphones, even if they don't know it.
