Andrew Garfield has said he would definitely do another musical after working on Tick, Tick… Boom!Coming into 2022, Garfield has had one of the busiest periods of his career after appearing in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, the biographical musical Tick, Tick…Boom! And Spider-Man: No Way Home in which he reprised his role as Peter Parker. Affirming the successes of his year, Garfield won the award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy at the latest Golden Globe awards for his performance in Tick, Tick … Boom! and has been tipped for a nomination in the Best Actor category at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Tick, Tick … Boom!, which was directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, was Garfield’s first foray into musical cinema, and prior to his involvement in the project the actor had never sung in public. Garfield trained his voice, and learnt to sing to a high standard for his role in the film as the lyricist and playwright Jonathan Larson. His performance, and the strength of his vocals, were praised by audiences and critics and some of the film’s highlights, alongside its sensitive and effective depiction of the AIDS crisis in the early 90s.

Now, in an interview with Variety, Garfield has shed some light on whether or not he would return to the genre in the future films. The actor has said that he would like to continue singing and working with his piano to maintain his voice, and he compared it to a “meditation practice.” The actor didn’t mention any specific future musicals that he would like to be involved in, however he did say that he “would definitely do it again.” Check out Garfield’s full comments below:

"I would love to keep my singing going. It’s such a gift that Lin-Manuel gave me in stretching out my skill set in this way. I have my piano in my room and I’m going to be doing a couple of private sessions over the next couple of weeks, just for myself, just to keep me with the instrument. It’s like a meditation practice. It was a great match and I would definitely do [a musical] again."

Given his excellent performance in Tick, Tick… Boom! fans of Garfield, and musical cinema more broadly, will be delighted by his openness to return to the musical genre. The actor’s comments will no doubt cause rumors to swirl about his involvement in upcoming films in the genre, and will lead to endless fan-castings. The next musical that Garfield is attached to will benefit hugely from the actor’s popularity, and proven talent when it comes to the performing arts.

Garfield certainly deserves a break after the difficult task of lying to MCU fans about his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home for over a year, and after the success of 2021 the actor may well use 2022 to slow down and consolidate. The actor is currently attached to several less high-profile projects including some TV work which has only been rare over the course of his career. Until more is learned about his upcoming work, fans will have to be content with his back-catalogue, including Tick, Tick … Boom! while keeping a keen eye on potential nominations and wins as the awards season accelerates.
