Andrew Garfield says he doesn't believe that he'll ever play Spider-Man again. Starring in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man movies, the actor's stint as the wall-crawler was unceremoniously cut short after Sony pulled the plug on The Amazing Spider-Man 3. But seven years after he exited the role, Garfield was given the chance to reprise his Peter Parker/Spider-Man portrayal, this time in the MCU through Spider-Man: No Way Home.

For months, the actor was hounded by questions regarding persistent rumors that he would appear in the latest Marvel Studios and Sony collaboration. Unlike fellow returning Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire, Garfield couldn't evade the press' questions, since he was also busy promoting other projects such as Netflix's Tick, Tick... Boom! and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Despite heavy fan speculation, however, Garfield was adamant about denying his Spider-Man's involvement in No Way Home. However, as is now well-known, the actor's cover-up was well intended, meant to preserve the surprising reveal of both he and fellow former Spider-Man Maguire joining Tom Holland's version of the hero in MCU threequel.

While Garfield's appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home revived plenty of interest in his iteration of the character, it doesn't appear that another Garfield Spidey return is likely. In a recent interview at the 2022 SAG Awards, the actor was asked by Variety whether audiences could expect to see his Peter Parker on screen again soon. Garfield quickly revealed that he has "no plans" to play Spider-Man again.

"No plans, that's the truth. I mean, everyone's gonna call me a liar for the rest of my life. I am the boy who cried wolf now."

It's clear that Garfield is aware of fans' suspicions towards any of his Spider-Man-related claims. After all, the actor repeatedly denied his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home, proving that he, like many MCU stars, is capable of explicitly lying to preserve Marvel secrets. That being said, there are no known concrete plans for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 from Sony, or for bringing Garfield's web-slinger back into the MCU's budding multiverse, so it's certainly possible that the window of opportunity has now closed. Garfield has also pointed out recently that he feels he's "far too old" to be playing Spider-Man, throwing further doubt on any potential return.

To many audiences, it may seem too early to be discussing Garfield's potential next outing as Spider-Man. Indeed, Spider-Man: No Way Home is still playing in theaters and proving to be a box office mega-hit, and Sony is now gearing up for the release of Morbius. In the event that Garfield did ever choose to don the mask again, there is no doubt that fans would be pleased, since his chemistry with fellow Spideys Maguire and Holland proved a highlight of No Way Home for countless viewers. However, while Spider-Man continues to capture hearts around the world, the MCU's multiverse has plenty more in store in the coming months.
