Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home

Andrew Garfield comments on the redemption for his Spider-Man over Gwen Stacy's death in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Garfield played Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man series of films, which did not continue past The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The end of that film saw Garfield's Spider-Man attempting to save his girlfriend, Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone), as she plummeted to her death, shooting a web and catching her, but the sudden stop snapping her neck and killing her. His character was last seen in the film mourning her death and attempting to move on as Spider-Man.

Sadly, Garfield wasn't given the chance to redeem his Spider-Man, as The Amazing Spider-Man 3 never happened. The character was instead rebooted in the MCU with actor Tom Holland, who first appeared as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, playing the role in crossovers and solo films all the way up to Spider-Man: No Way Home, where both Garfield and Tobey Maguire, the Spider-Man from Sam Raimi's films, both appeared and assisted Holland's Spider-Man.

However, neither Garfield or Maguire showed up in the film as simple walk-on roles, but rather in fully fleshed out appearances that gave weight and redemption to their respective Spider-Men. Talking to Variety, Garfield commented on his return to the character, specifically the redemption he was able to get after the death of Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The moment of redemption involved Garfield saving MJ (Zendaya) from falling to her death, successfully rescuing her in similar fashion as he had attempted with Gwen, but this time without the dire results. The actor elaborated, saying:

My Spider-Man got to save his younger brother’s romantic relationship, potentially. And to heal the most traumatic moment of his own life through doing it for his younger brother. Making sure that he didn’t have the same fate, there’s something cosmically beautiful about that. It meant getting a second chance at saving Gwen.

While The Amazing Spider-Man 3 never happened, Garfield went on to other successful projects nonetheless. He starred in a number of high-profile projects, including Mel Gibson's WWII drama, Hacksaw Ridge, Martin Scorsese's Silence, Andy Serkis' Breathe, and Michael Showalter's The Eyes of Tammy Faye. He most recently starred in Lin Manuel Miranda's tick, tick...BOOM! and will next appear in the Hulu mini-series adaptation of Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven.

Garfield has proven to be a magnetic and affable actor, choosing a wide variety of roles that keep him challenged, be it as a war hero, superhero, a polio patient, a televangelist, or a composer, and beyond. While calls have been rampant to see him return as Spider-Man in some capacity after the emotional appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it would ultimately be more than enough just to have the moment of redemption in the film to bring his Spider-Man arc to a close. Still, if it were at all possible, having Garfield spinning webs again on the big screen would be a welcome continuation of what he began back in 2012.
