Andrew Garfield reacts to the phenomenon of 4 different Spider-Man stars getting nominated for Oscars this year. The Spider-Man franchise is just coming off the release of its biggest movie yet, the Marvel and Sony co-production Spider-Man: No Way Home. The MCU installment stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and finds him confronting the multiverse after a botched spell from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) starts pulling in figures from alternate universes. No Way Home has propelled itself to be the 4th highest-grossing movie of all time with a $749 million domestic total and could pass Avatar in the coming days.

The immense success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, not to mention its status as a critically acclaimed film, led many to wonder if it could score some major nominations for the 2022 Oscars. Marvel and Sony even mounted an awards campaign, but the eventual announcement of this year's Oscar hopefuls gave No Way Home only one nom for special effects. At the same time, 4 different actors who have appeared in Spider-Man movies received nominations for other films; 3 of them starred in No Way Home. Those Spider-Man alums are Garfield (for tick, tick... BOOM!), Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), J.K. Simmons (Being the Ricardos), and Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog).

While sharing his gratitude for his own nomination with EW, Garfield took the time to comment on how funny it is that so many Spider-Man actors are represented in these year's Oscars. He, like a lot of fans likely do, found it amusing and was sure to share praise for each nominee. Garfield said:

"How funny it is that? I'm so happy for Kirsten. I think her performance in The Power of the Dog is second to none. And Benedict. Obviously, J.K.. I'm a huge fan. It's a very, very funny thing. It's a cool morning."

For Garfield especially, this moment is a big one. He's coming off one of his most successful periods ever with back-to-back acclaimed performances in The Eyes of Tammy Faye and tick, tick... BOOM!. Plus, his eagerly anticipated cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which came alongside fellow past Peter Parker Tobey Maguire, has received nothing but adulation from the fans. Many have called upon Sony to make another Spider-Man movie with Garfield in the suit, though nothing has come to fruition just yet.

There might be some disappointment over No Way Home's less-than-hoped-for presence in this year's Oscar nominees, but the recognition of those like Cumberbatch, Dunst, and Simmons just shows how smart the Spider-Man franchise was in picking its talent. Spider-Man fans will have to tune into the Oscars next month to see if any of them manage to win in their respective categories; Garfield especially has been drumming up some buzz when it comes to the best actor race. Even if none of them come away with a statuette, though, they're already winners in many fans' eyes.
