Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man reset the Spider-Man movie continuity and laid the foundation for larger developments in the future, but it's the second installment that will begin the process of constructing a superhero cinematic universe to rival Marvel Studios' film-verse.

The official Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer offers a sneak peek at those blueprints, with a handful of intriguing Easter Eggs - teasing developments that will occur in future movies - sprinkled amidst the glimpses at significant plot beats that are going to take place in the second installment. Similarly, a couple of important TASM2 cast members have already begun talking to the press about their return in the third chapter, due to the fact that Amazing Spider-Man 2 is just an introduction to their comic book movie counterparts.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 leads Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy), Jamie Foxx (Max Dillon/Electro) and director Marc Webb - helmer on the first installment - recently conducted an interview with Yahoo! Movies, where they spoke about the sequel and the rebooted Spider-Man franchise in general.

You can watch that video below:

There's a lot of intriguing material to take in here, but by far the juiciest comments were served up by Garfield, in response to questions about The Amazing Spider-Man 4 (which already has a 2018 release date):

“I mean I’m under contract for another one after ['The Amazing Spider-Man 2'] … as far as a forth one? That’s not anything to do with me. But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world."

Garfield's response here isn't completely out of left-field, given that it was Webb who previously indicated that the fourth installment in the Amazing Spider-Man continuity might not be your traditional Spider-Man movie. Very much so, a movie that (potentially) doesn't include Peter Parker himself (or some other comic book character known for donning the Spider duds) would not be considered a conventional Spider-Man film.

Here is an exact quote from the director, on that subject:

“I think [for] the fourth movie, what we’ve discovered is there are so many ancillary characters, that have enormous, cinematic potential that there may be other ways to exploit those characters, in a way that is exciting and fun and worthwhile. It might not just be a ‘Spider-Man’ movie."

Sinister Six - Amazing Spider-Man 2

Amazing Spider-Man 2 looks to be building towards a showdown between Spidey and the Sinister Six - a half-dozen of the web-slinger's most dangerous super-powered opponents - faster than anticipated. Current rumors point to the possibility that the sequel may establish and/or introduce every member of the super villain squad before it draws to a close (that includes, during the customary mid-credits scene). In other words, Amazing Spider-Man 3 may well end up bringing Garfield's rendition of Peter Parker's character arc to a proper concluding point, when all is said and done.

Thereafter? Well, Sony Co-Chairman Amy Pascal has already hinted at potential Spider-Man spinoffs in the future (revolving around the other Marvel characters that her studio owns), while Amazing Spider-Man 2 co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci - who are returning to co-write and produce the third installment - have gone on record as having expressed their interest in tackling the character of Venom (who, rumor has it, will be teased in the second movie). So, a Venom spinoff is a definite option.

Would you be interested in a spinoff featuring Venom, the Sinister Six or some other character from the Spider-Man universe? Are you hoping that Garfield as Peter Parker will appear in some (if not all) of any future Amazing Spider-Man spinoffs that end up getting produced, even though he won't be the focus?
