Lucasfilm has revealed the first Andor trailer giving viewers a look at the highly anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel series. Set five years before the events of the 2016 spinoff film, the Star Wars show will center on Cassian Andor as he goes from being a thief to becoming a rebel spy in the early days of the Rebellion. Diego Luna is returning to lead the cast of Andor in the titular role alongside fellow Star Wars vets Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera and Genevieve O'Reilly as Mon Mothma.

Alongside Luna, Whitaker and O'Reilly, Andor will mark the Star Wars franchise debuts of Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough and Kyle Soller. Development on the series was first announced in 2018 as Disney and Lucasfilm began working on multiple Star Wars projects for Disney+, with Zootopia's Jared Bush originally developing Andor and Rogue One co-writer Tony Gilroy eventually becoming showrunner. With production on Andor having wrapped in late 2021, audiences are finally getting their first glimpse at the show.

After being shrouded in mystery for the better part of two years, the official Andor trailer offers plenty of exciting looks at what's to come from the new Star Wars show. Between looks at the various new locales seen throughout the show to a different look at the behind-the-scenes of the Empire's offices, the footage points to plenty of exciting world-building to come from the series. Gilroy has teased that the show will carry the long-running franchise in a number of interesting directions, including making a few major deviations from Star Wars canon.

Additionally, the Andor trailer carries a similar look and feel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which moved the franchise away from the more sweeping spectacles of prior films towards a gritty and grounded war drama. Prior to the 2016 film, Gilroy had successfully delivered in this atmosphere as the writer of the first three Jason Bourne movies and writing and directing the Jeremy Renner-led The Bourne Legacy. Only time will tell if Gilroy can strike gold again when the first two episodes of Andor premieres on Disney+ on August 31.
