Tony Gilroy, creator and showrunner on Andor, has confirmed the filming start date for season 2 of the hit Star Wars series. Starring Diego Luna as the titular thief turned Rebel spy Cassian Andor, the ensemble cast also features the return of Genevieve O'Reilly to the role of Mon Mothma, the Imperial Senator who goes on to help found the Rebel Alliance. Other celebrated cast members include Stellan Skarsgård, Denise Gough and Andy Serkis. Season 1 of Andor is still currently airing weekly on Disney+, with the season 1 finale scheduled to drop on November 23.

Serving as a prequel to the 2016 spinoff film Rogue One: A Star Wars story, Andor has been widely praised for its grounded and gritty take on the Lucasfilm universe. Forgoing Jedi and lightsaber battles for political intrigue, subterfuge and exploring the intricacies of what it means to resist an oppressive Imperial regime, Gilroy has helped to craft a series that reveals a very different side to that very famous galaxy far, far away. Despite getting off to a slow start with audiences, a recent study has shown that audience demand for Andor is now almost on an equal footing as that for The Mandalorian.

Most recently, Gilroy confirmed to Collider that production on Andor season 2 is now set to get underway in London later this month. The Star Wars show creator suggests that filming is scheduled to begin on the Monday before Thanksgiving, marking the production start date as November 21. Gilroy also revealed he would be present for the first shot of Andor season 2, before flying back home for the holiday.

What To Expect From Andor Season 2

It has previously been revealed that Andor season 2 will lead directly into the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a time when the Rebel Alliance marked its first major victory against the Empire and successfully retrieved the plans for the Death Star from an Imperial research facility on Scarif. From what audiences have witnessed in Andor season 1, however, the Rebels have a long way to go before they can become the united fighting force seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and beyond. As such, fans can reasonably expect to see Mon Mothma and the rebel leadership take much greater strides toward forging their alliances with the disparate Rebel cells already scattered throughout the galaxy.

Gilroy has recently confirmed that the rebel base on Yavin 4, seen in both Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Episode IV: A New Hope, will feature throughout Andor season 2. As such, the new season will also likely feature a time jump from the events of season 1, bringing audiences ever closer to the events they are already familiar with. Fans can also potentially look forward to the arrival of Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO in season 2, as the Cassian Andor featured on the show makes his final transformations from a self-centered thief to the dedicated rebel operative first seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
