Amy Schumer appears to have found her next movie project, in the form of I Feel Pretty. Few comedians can claim the degree of success that Schumer has been enjoying as of late. Having made a name for herself with her multiple Emmy award-winning series Inside Amy Schumer, the no-holds barred talent has been navigating a steady rise from TV to film. Although Schumer’s sense of humor isn’t necessarily for everyone, the success of Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck back in 2015 (which Schumer both headlined and wrote) proved she’s a bankable comedic star.

In fact, for a while there it looked as though Schumer was about to become the face of a brand new franchise with Sony’s upcoming live-action Barbie movie. No doubt that playing the most iconic doll of all time would have gained her a whole new level of celebrity status, but it wasn’t to be. Schumer stepping away from the Barbie film due to scheduling conflicts dashes the hopes of anyone who was looking forward to seeing an Amy Schumer-led Barbie. Given that she was too busy to play Barbie then, what exactly does Schumer have lined up for 2017?

Well, according to Variety, Amy Schumer is now set to star in Voltage Pictures’ upcoming I Feel Pretty. The film will be directed by duo Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, who also wrote the script. This will mark the first feature-length directorial effort for the pair, though they have written a handful of rom-coms together in the past, such as He’s Just Not That Into You and How to Be Single. At present there isn’t much at all to go on regarding I Feel Pretty – just that principal photography should get underway this summer on the East Coast.

In terms of plot, there’s unfortunately nothing to report as of yet, but Schumer is also on board the project as a producer. Given Kohn and Silverstein’s past work writing rom-coms, there’s a good chance that I Feel Pretty could also fall into that genre. This will definitely be a busy year for Schumer, whose upcoming comedy, Snatched, will see her star alongside iconic comedic actress Goldie Hawn as a mother and daughter finding themselves on the vacation from hell. And in the fall, Schumer will pair up with Miles Teller (Bleed for This) for the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder drama Thank You For Your Service. And not to stray too far from her comedy roots, Schumer also has a new stand up special – Amy Schumer: The Leather Special - which is currently available on Netflix.

Snatched

Perhaps one of the most interesting things about Amy Schumer is that she’s willing to venture into territory that most female comedians won’t touch. There’s a confidence and outright refreshing boldness about her style and this came through in Trainwreck, providing plenty of laughs in the process. However, it would be a shame if I Feel Pretty slogs along the familiar and well tread lines of the rom-com. Schumer’s talent makes it necessary to push the envelope, so hopefully Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein won’t make the mistake of giving her nothing more to work with than another rehashed cliché.

Fans of Schumer who had been looking forward to her starring as Barbie might feel as though they lost the chance to see her try something different. There’s plenty of consolation, however, in the fact that Schumer’s career seems to be growing on a daily basis. The slate of projects she’s got on the way are ample evidence that one of the biggest names in comedy at the moment is ready to take on a lot - and there are bound to be surprises along the way.
