Fans have been hoping for a crossover with Among Us and Super Smash Bros. for some time, and the creator of Smash Bros., Masahiro Sakurai, recently shared some of his thoughts on the social deduction game from indie studio InnerSloth. Interestingly, he compares Among Us to card games - here's why.

In his recent Famitsu columnMasahiro Sakurai shared his thoughts on Among Us. This includes Sakurai's thoughts on the game's popularity and how long he thinks that popularity will last. These concerns are warranted, since some industry experts predict games like Among Us that got big in 2020 will lose their player bases once COVID-19 restrictions are gone. But since the pandemic is ongoing, that means it could be months or even years before that starts to happen.

In the column, Sukurai says he enjoys Among Us, but he's not sure it will be a lasting game. That's probably harsh news for fans who were hoping for an Among Us and Smash Bros. crossover, since it sounds like Sakurai isn't planning on introducing an Impostor fighter in Smash Bros. anytime soon. Sakurai also compares Among Us to card games, which might sound like a strange comparison until he explains why.

Why Smash Bros.' Sakurai Thinks Among Us Is Like Card Games

Masahiro Sakurai Among Us

When discussing his thoughts on Among Us, Masahiro Sakurai compares the game to playing cards, because strategy in Among Us relies on "natural instincts" instead of real game mechanics. In other words, the fun of the game is dependent on players and not the gameplay itself.

This is actually a pretty valid assessment, since even the best games in Among Us can get ruined by hackers or cheaters. Even getting into a group with people who abuse calling Emergency Meetings can put a damper on things. So, it's understandable why Sakurai might feel this way. However, it's a criticism many people could also point at Smash Bros. or any number of other multiplayer games that can be played online, so maybe all hope of an Among Us and Smash Bros. crossover isn't lost, after all.

For now, a crossover with Among Us and Smash Bros. may seem like an unrealistic dream, and mods may be the closest thing to an official Impostor fighter that fans ever get. Sakurai's comparison of Among Us to card games is pretty interesting, and it's worth nothing that the Smash Bros. creator likes the game. So if Among Us remains popular long enough, perhaps fans will get their fighter eventually.
