Developer InnerSloth's massive hit Among Us has roughly half a billion active monthly players in November alone, with a report from SuperData highlighting how that total helps distinguish the game as one of the most important - and popular - games in the world. Among Us was first released in 2018, but took a while to catch on until it began garnering steam among Twitch content creators, with streams showcasing the game to hundreds, then thousands of new users who then tried it out for themselves, eventually culminating in a Best Multiplayer Game of 2020 win at The Game Awards 2020.
Among Us might be known as a PC title to those who watch its frequent high-profile Twitch streams - some of which, in the past, have even included North American politicians - but its mobile user base has been significantly larger. That's set to change once more, as Among Us on Nintendo Switch became available earlier this month and could see the needle move on the game's player base shares slightly. While Among Us on Switch is unlikely to drastically change the relationship between the mobile version of the game and its other available platforms, it does seem set to see the game's total playerbase swell even more than it already has.
A report from SuperData helped highlight just how popular Among Us already is, even before its Switch release. The report stated that roughly half a billion active players were recorded for Among Us in November alone, making it what the company calls "the most popular game ever in terms of monthly players." The report also noticed that, while the PC version of Among Us contributed the most to InnerSloth's revenue with a 64% share of profits generated, the actual player base on PC accounts for a mere 3% of the game's total players.
Among Us remains such a popular choice due to its accessibility, both in terms of platform and price. The game's agreeable price tag of around $5 USD makes it easy to give it a shot, and now that it's on Nintendo Switch, there are enough options to reach most household demographics multiple times over. Beyond those factors, though, Among Us has also seen sustained popularity because of its simple premise - it's a game that's deep enough to appeal to competitive gamers but easy enough on its most basic level to be played by virtually anyone.
While it isn't shocking to hear Among Us is popular, it is a little mind-boggling to realize that around half a billion active users played Among Us in November alone. Those numbers would've seemed impossible a year ago, and InnerSloth's juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down, as it remains a fixture among content creators and families alike.
