Among Us' success isn't slowing since it's Nintendo Switch, as the game has now sold over three million units. Ever since Among Us gained traction in the latter half of 2020, it has gone virtually nowhere but up in its popularity.
With the world being forced to stay at home during 2020, social and multiplayer games have done excellently throughout the year. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Animal Crossing: New Horizons released at what's been widely deemed the perfect time, and became one of the Switch's most successful titles as a result. Despite the continued success of the AAA side of the industry, 2018 indie Among Us took home the award for best multiplayer game at 2020's game awards due to it gaining a sudden boost in popularity from streamers.
It's unsurprising, then, that the success of Among Us carried over to its Nintendo Switch. SuperData Research's post on December's digital games market that although player numbers weren't as high as in November, the game sold 3.2 million copies on Switch and was the highest selling version of the game during that period. It also states that the game was 2.8 times more popular than Roblox, which is the next most-popular multiplayer title measured.
One of the reasons for Among Us' growth in popularity is its easy accessibility. The game came out on the Switch eShop for only $5, and given how easy and fun the gameplay is, players get quite the bang for their buck. It's core gameplay centers around finding out who among a group of players are Impostors while finishing tasks (or killing the crewmates if they're the Impostor), which is very simple to grasp for casual players, making any session of Among Us into an engaging time. The Switch is also a very accessible and successful console, so putting the successful indie game on the Switch is an obvious match made in heaven.
These Nintendo Switch sales figures suggest that Among Us is continuing to grow. More content is continually being added into the game, such as the Airship map arriving sometime early this year. While this hot streak could theoretically die out after some time, it doesn't seem as though that time will come anytime soon. The only thing that can be expected from Among Us is that it will climb higher and higher as one of the most popular multiplayer games of all time.
