[UPDATE 15/12/2020 12:30PM: Nintendo announced earlier today that Among Us has dropped on Nintendo Switch. It is available to download now!]

With a game as popular as Among Us, fans are wondering when they can expect to see the successful indie title on other consoles such as Nintendo Switch. Currently the game can be enjoyed for free on mobile devices and for the low price of $4.99 on PC systems. The developers at InnerSloth have made mention of potential console support, so what does the future hold for Among Us in regards to Switch gaming?

The comfort and ease of both the regular Switch and Lite systems would be ideal for playing Among Us, and Nintendo certainly isn't lacking when it comes to offering other great indie titles like the popular farming simulator Stardew Valley or Studio MDHR's Cuphead. It seems natural for Nintendo and InnerSloth to join forces to make Among Us even more accessible than it already is, and this idea has certainly crossed the developers' minds.

Although Among Us can be enjoyed cross-platform between mobile and PC systems, there hasn't been much talk about the sensational social deduction game having a presence on other platforms due to a few technical hiccups, as explained by the InnerSloth developers during Trainwreckstv's Twitch stream last September. Here is the Among Us creators' thoughts and expectations concerning the expansion to other consoles, including Nintendo Switch.

Among Us & Nintendo Switch: InnerSloth Talks Console Support

Among Us Discuss

Currently, there is no official news confirming that Among Us will release on Nintendo Switch, but that doesn't mean this desired marriage will never come to fruition. In lieu of an Among Us 2, InnerSloth switched gears and now has its hands full working on a new update for the beloved online multiplayer game. There is just so many other issues to iron out before the team can really put in any effort into actualizing a jump as big as branching out to different consoles at this time. A main focus for now is creating an account system so players can have an in-game friends list to better manage who they play with. This alone is a big challenge considering that improving Among Us involves working with an outdated codebase. Once the developers figure this out, however, they can start finding other ways to improve Among Us.

Another roadblock for console support involves the game's communication status. Ironically, Among Us relies so much on conversing during appropriate times, yet it has no in-game or auto-mute voice chat feature. Outside of complementary apps like Discord, the only way to speak with other players is through the game's somewhat inconvenient text chat that can be rather cumbersome, especially for mobile users. This is also on InnerSloth's radar, and when it comes being able to play Among Us on other platforms like the Switch, the team mentioned the idea of implementing a more sophisticated quick chat option similar to the one featured in the vehicular soccer game, Rocket League. The developers are very much aware that Among Us needs to improve its current communication method, but for now are unsure about how to go about doing this.

Considering InnerSloth is made of only three developers who are each already elbows-deep in adding new content to an already troublesome codebase, it will likely be awhile before fans can expect to play Among Us on console systems. However, the team's work-in-progress shows that they are listening to their audience, and just because they aren't sure how to apply these requested features at this time doesn't mean it will never happen. Once more pressing matters are sorted out, InnerSloth will be free to explore other ways to enhance Among Us. It seems likely that after the upcoming update releases, and fans have ample time to absorb the new content, the creators will eventually make the sequel that was originally promised, as it will be easier to tweak and add new features to that up-to-date coding. It will be interesting to see how Among Us continues to evolve over the next few years, and it seems only a matter of time before it makes its way to consoles like Nintendo Switch.
