The 2018 indie social deduction game Among Us was able to pull off a big win during The Game Awards 2020 when it was announced to be the winner of the Multiplayer Game of the Year Award over nominees Fall Guys and Animal Crossing. While Fall Guys and Animal Crossing were actually released in 2020, Among Us' newfound online presence has made it an obvious force to be reckoned with.

Among Us was originally released in 2018 as a local mobile title, and was later released on PC and given online capabilities. However, it's minuscule player base could have easily considered the game a failure at launch. It wasn't until September of 2020 that streamers brought attention to the game. Over the course of the past couple of months, Among Us has garnered millions of players, boosted the careers of many content creators, and formed an incredibly wholesome community.

It was announced at The Game Awards 2020 that Among Us won the award for Multiplayer Game of the Year, beating out other hit titles such as Fall Guys, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and even Call of Duty: Warzone. While the other titles on the list were among some of the most popular titles this year, none have had an impact quite like Among Us. The hit game also picked up an award for Mobile Game of the Year.

However, not everyone is happy with the results of this award. Of the five nominees, Among Us was the only title that wasn't released in 2020. Fall Guys, Animal Crossing, Valorant, and Warzone were all released within the last 12 months, and have all had a considerable and loyal following. Angry viewers took to Twitter to respond to the results claiming that their favorite game should have won over a game released two years ago. Yet, there still would have been a mob of angry gamers regardless of who won best multiplayer game.

Among Us truly is deserving of this award due to the impact it was had on the gaming community. While Animal Crossing is one of the biggest titles of the year, its multiplayer aspects don't feel like a vital portion of the game. Fall Guys is another indie title that made a lot of noise this year, but it proved to be a fire that burnt out quickly. Among Us has maintained an unparalleled amount of popularity for months bringing together gamers from different walks of life proving it to be more than deserving of Multiplayer Game of the Year.
