Even though it released in 2018, Among Us has gotten incredibly popular over the course of the past year, and its popularity shows no signs of slowing down. Currently, Impostors and crewmates are chosen randomly before a match, but a new matchmaking option that allows players to choose their own role could be really great.

Although mods continue adding in new roles to Among Us, like the Doctor or Sheriff or new Snitch role, the official game only has two real roles: Impostor and crewmate. Impostors are the assigned killers, while crewmates must work together and finish tasks while trying to find out who the Impostors are. InnerSloth, the indie studio behind Among Us, currently doesn't allow players to choose their own roles - but a new matchmaking option could change that it.

The Impostor is a pretty popular role, which is probably why InnerSloth randomizes Impostor selection. There's also data proving Impostors win more often than crewmates. So, there are plenty of reasons why InnerSloth might be reluctant to let players choose their own role. If everyone wants to play Impostor, for instance, then that means longer queue times and more delays between matches. Still, a new matchmaking option based on roles could work out well in the game, as long as it's implemented right.

How Matchmaking Roles Could Make Among Us Even Better

Role matchmaking isn't new to gaming. MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV use this system for dungeon and raid queues all the time. A similar matchmaking option would be great for players of Among Us, since it would allow them to choose whichever role they wanted. And even though Impostor is popular, there are still plenty of players who would like joining as a crewmate. If Impostor wait times are longer, then plenty of players could jump in the crewmate queue for a shorter wait time and a quicker match.

Overall, that means it should even out over time. Giving players more options to choose the role they want would be a great quality-of-life improvement. The fact that many players are using role mods, such as the Jester role, in Among Us, speaks to the demand of more options in the game. A new matchmaking feature would be an ideal way to keep Among Us' core gameplay mechanics while also giving fans more choices.

Of course, nothing official has been unveiled by InnerSloth yet. However, a matchmaking option for Impostor and crewmate roles could be really great in Among Us. It would give players more choice and freedom, and it could make the game even better.
