Jimmy Fallon will play Among Us on Twitch with a handful of celebrities later tonight as part of a way to raise money for the Feeding America charity. The Among Us stream will feature cast members from Stranger Things, various noteworthy Twitch streamers, and also mark Jimmy Fallon's Twitch debut. Whether or not this will go on to be a semi-regular thing for the late night host is unclear.
Among Us has been rising in popularity last summer as a fun way to stay social with friends during the pandemic. Star congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez streamed Among Us on Twitch last year to encourage people to vote prior to the 2020 election, giving the game an even bigger boost in public presence. Since its meteoric rise, the game topped Steam and app store charts before making its way to Nintendo Switch, with Xbox releases coming later in 2021. Developer InnerSloth ended up scrapping ideas for a sequel to double down on the original game, adding new maps and other content to the 2018 original, including the recently released Airship map and accounts update.
With Among Us is still riding its popularity high, The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon will stream the game with The Roots members Questlove, Tariq Trotter, and Kirk Douglas, as well as Stranger Things cast members Noah Schnapp and Gaten Matarazzo. InnerSloth community director Victoria Tran and streamers Corpse Husband, Sykkuno, and Valkyrae will also join the stream to play the brand-new Among Us Airship map. Fallon will host the event on his Twitch channel Tuesday, April 6 at 3:45 PM PDT/6:45 PM EDT. Segments of the stream will also air the following week during The Tonight Show.
Jimmy Fallon has long championed gaming on his show, ranging from showcasing a demo for The Last of Us in 2012 to playing Goldeneye 007 with James Bond himself, Pierce Brosnan. Whether or not this will be a regular occurrence for Fallon or just a one-time charity stream is unclear, but it's possible the talk show host could host more streams in future if there's a big enough turnout for this star-studded Among Us get-together. Other late night hosts like Conan O'Brien have also carved out sections of their show to showcase video games over the years, showing a more mainstream acceptance of the medium.
As it hits more platforms and, now, mainstream TV airwaves, Among Us's popularity may only continue to grow. Even if this is the high-water mark for InnerSloth's sleeper indie hit, it's been great to see Among Us being used as a platform for good by stars like Jimmy Fallon.
Among Us is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android, and it will launch on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One in 2021.
