Mods aside, Among Us is effectively a multiplayer-only game. In fact, it's best played with the largest number of people possible - currently 10, soon to be 15 - which means that developer InnerSloth needs to make it available wherever possible by supporting crossplay. Platform support is still expanding, but InnerSloth is well on its way toward that goal.

When Among Us first launched in June 2018, it was a mobile-only title for iOS and Android. InnerSloth did eventually add a PC version, which premiered in November 2018. This was the first edition to enable crossplay, meaning that mobile and PC players could join the same match. It wasn't until 2020, however, that Twitch and YouTube streamers like Sodapoppin turned the game into a genuine success, prompting a Nintendo Switch port in December last year. The game's streaming numbers may have declined somewhat, but it retains a high number of followers.

Switch players are likewise included in crossplay, offering the rare trinity of mobile, PC, and console support. The mobile versions of games like Call of Duty and PUBG are fully separate from their siblings, and even Fortnite splits its crossplay into different groups. Of course, Among Us lends itself better to universal compatibility - it's a 2D game with simple controls, whereas a 3D title like PUBG can't necessarily run at the same fidelity everywhere.

Is Among Us Crossplay Coming To Any Other Systems?

Crossplay compatibility will presumably extend to the Xbox and PlayStation versions of Among Us, both of which are launching sometime in 2021. Functionally, those consoles should be no different than the Switch, though the PlayStation release, at least, is getting exclusive Ratchet & Clank skins. These skins will still be visible on other platforms - they just won't be available to download anywhere except on a PS4 or PS5. So far, no Xbox exclusives have been confirmed, but they do seem likely now that PlayStation has some exclusives.

Every edition of Among Us has its own quirks - the PC version is moddable, for example, and the Switch version lacks access to paid DLC. It's probably a safe assumption that if the game heads to any other platforms in coming years, InnerSloth will insist on maintaining crossplay, which may be essential to keeping player counts high. Fundamentally, it's a party game, and excluding platforms can mean excluding someone's friends, so it's great that the game supports crossplay for all of its platforms.
