A chicken nugget, shaped like a crewmate from indie game Among Us, is being sold on Ebay for more than $34,000. The online game, which blends cooperative gameplay with social simulation and horror, released back in 2018 but received newfound popularity in 2020. This surge in attention is largely attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Among Us is now both a highly popular title and an icon of pop culture.
Last Friday an amusing Ebay listing appeared, with a user attempting to sell a McDonald's chicken nugget which is humorously shaped like an Among Us crewmate. The seller, polizna, reportedly discovered the suspicious treat in a BTS Combo Meal from the fast-food chain. The BTS Combo Meal is a special meal which apparently features the preferred order of the South Korean boy band BTS. The valuable chicken nugget is bean-shaped, like the cremates body, and features two short protrusions which resemble the crewmate's legs.
The official Among Us Twitter account recently shared polizna's Ebay listing and revealed that bidding on the edible astronaut has now surpassed $34,ooo. The chicken nugget, curiously listed in a "Used" condition by polizna, has amassed more than 120 bidders since the auction began on March 28. The item's description explains that chicken nuggets have an average expiration period of 14 days, though the listing does assure potential buyers that it will be delivered prior to expiration. The Among Us Twitter account asks McDonald's to either team up to purchase the outer space treat, or send a free one.
Among Us developer Innersloth recently grew in size, with a new game strategist increasing the independent studio's crew size to nine. This is still a remarkably small number of developers, however, especially considering the massive popularity of the online sci-fi title. Despite the small size of the development team, the popularity of Among Us remains high as more and more gamers join the game's welcoming yet distrusting community. The game's player count on PC recently reached two million players as the result of a free giveaway on the Epic Games Store. The giveaway resulted in a massive spike in players for the game, particularly due to many American gamers having free time during Memorial Day Weekend.
Among Us has grown to become a huge icon of popular culture, with both gamers and non-gamers alike recognizing the game's simply-shaped playable characters. While auctioning off a chicken nugget that resembles a crewmate seems a bit crazy, bidders have proven that there is a profit to be made off of this potentially undercover edible.
