The Americans may not have walked away with any major Emmy wins for its terrific fourth season, but it has certainly worked its way onto many must-see lists. The Cold War-set series, has two more seasons on the way, which means the endgame is about to be put into motion. With the upcoming season 5 arriving this March, it is time for FX to start giving audiences a look at what to expect.
Just as FX has been airing a variety of promos for their upcoming X-Men-based series Legion, the network is now starting to put up their TV spots for The Americans. As can be seen above, the first promo, titled "School's Out," presents a first look at season 5.
While this may just be an evocative advertisement setting the tone for the season, rather than actual footage, it does the job. As fans of the show are aware (mild spoilers ahead), Paige (Holly Taylor), daughter of Soviet spies Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, is now aware of who her parents really are and has been struggling with that secret. This promo puts emphasis on her status as one who knows the truth and may not be in fear of a Soviet invasion the way other true Americans are. The video's subtitle reads, "This is not a drill," which is completely appropriate, given the escalating tensions taking place in the time period, as well as for the characters.
An official description of the season reads as follows:
"In the new season of FX's drama The Americans, the arranged marriage of Philip and Elizabeth Jennings grows more passionate and genuine in the midst of the escalating Cold War. Paige’s budding romance with Matthew, the son of their neighbor, FBI Agent Stan Beeman, further complicates matters since Stan – Philip’s best friend – remains the greatest threat to the Jennings’ safety."
The previous season of the series was a triumph in terms of awards, as it received Emmy recognition for both lead stars and the series as a whole. While the show did not win any of these major awards, Russell and Rhys were also nominated for Golden Globes for their performances, in addition to many other accolades. As the series is one built on suspense, characters, and deliberate pacing, The Americans may not be the showiest on television, but it has certainly worked for critics and the audiences who have tuned in over the years.
In regard to this promo and the season 5 description, it looks like the plight of Paige will once again be one of the major factors in how the Jennings go about doing their work and maintaining their established family life. One also can't help but draw parallels between the series' unique take on the Soviet's involvement in the U.S. and where we are today. Of course, the series is much more focused on domestic drama and espionage thrills, but it is also very clever and well-written.
However this season plays out, as far as its plot and characters are concerned, it will be interesting to see if this season is able to make an even bigger critical splash than the very well-received fourth season.
The Americans season 5 premieres March 7 on FX.
