A previously-released red band teaser for next year’s American Reunion hinted that the new American Pie flick would feature just as much awkward situational humor and lewd sex comedy as previous installments in the franchise.
Today we have the green band teaser trailer for the film. Since the all-audences-approved preview cannot include the naughtier jokes and bits from American Reunion, it instead aims to arouse a sense of nostalgia – by showing off the original American Pie cast, looking all adult and mature (or something like that).
American Reunion writing/directing duo Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are no strangers when it comes to making comedies with envelope-pushing adult humor (see: the A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas red band trailer). However, the theatrically-released American Pies movies are somewhat of a different beast, seeing how they always aim to successfully mix foul-mouthed jokes and sex gags with genuinely-touching and tender character drama.
Whether or not American Reunion will actually pull that trick off remains to be seen. However, the simple sight of American Pie alumni Jim (Jason Biggs), Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), Steve/Stifler (Sean William Scott), Oz (Chris Klein), Vicky (Tara Reid), Heather (Mena Suvari), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Jessica (Natasha Lyonne), and Fincher (Eddie Kaye Thomas) reuniting after ten years should be enough for dedicated Pie fans… for now.
That said – check out the American Reunion teaser trailer below:
It’s difficult to really assess whether or not American Reunion will deliver the comedy goods based on this new theatrical preview, seeing how it cannot feature any of the “juicy” R-Rated jokes… though, the handful of gags on display here, including the (almost-customary) Twilight jab and especially the flirtatious meeting between Jim’s dad (Eugene Levy) and Stifler’s mom (Jennifer Coolidge), are worth a chuckle or two. Hopefully, though, the final product will pack much more of a funny punch.
Hurwitz and Schlossberg have generally done well, when it comes to creating amusingly eccentric characters in the Harold & Kumar movies (ex. Neil Patrick Harris as “himself”). All the same, sentimental character interactions and moments aren’t exactly something the pair have ever really tried to produce before. So, best to just wait and see how well they manage to handle that aspect of the American Pie movie formula in Reunion.
American Reunion is slated to hit U.S. theaters on April 6th, 2012.
