Eugene Levy played Jim's Dad in every other entry, so why didn't he return for 2020's American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules? American Pie from 1999 saw a group of high school friends pledging to lose their virginities before graduation, resulting in any number of awkward or gross mishaps. The movie became somewhat infamous for a scene involving Jason Biggs and an apple pie, and it was a huge hit upon release.
The movie's success inspired a wave of similar teen gross-out comedies, including Road Trip, Van Wilder and many more. Of course, sequels to American Pie were inevitable, with part two soon arriving in 2001 and the "trilogy" ending with American Wedding in 2003. The rise of DVD saw the arrival of a spinoff titled American Pie Presents: Band Camp in 2005, which featured a mostly new cast of characters. Eugene Levy was one of the few returnees and added a bit of class to the project.
These STV spinoffs cleared turned a neat profit, as three more arrived between 2006 and 2009. Levy stayed with the series too, though his screentime was relatively small in each outing. He also returned for American Reunion, a 2012 theatrical sequel that brought back most of the original cast. The most recent was another STV spinoff American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules, which provided something of a gender-flipped take on the premise, but Levy's Noah Levenstein - AKA "Jim's Dad" - was notable by his absence this time.
There's currently no official word on why Levy opted out of appearing, or if he was even offered a cameo in American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules. That said, even if he was, the comic star has in recent years received critical acclaim for his work in sitcom Schitt's Creek. In addition to being hilarious, the show also boasted great performances from Levy, his son Dan (the duo co-created the show) Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy.
Schitt's Creek came to an end in 2020 after six seasons and is regarded as one of the best comedy shows of the last decade. Levy hasn't done much outside of the series in recent years either, with his most recent live-action movie being 2012's Madea's Witness Protection. It's possible he simply didn't want to follow up the ending of what is undoubtedly one of the crowning achievements of his career with the ninth American Pie. Filming on the final season of Schitt's Creek didn't seem to clash with Girls' Rules production schedule either, so he may have just declined a return.
In 2012, Levy explained his participation in the STV American Pie movies, telling Vulture the money involved was too good as he was being paid a lot for not much work. Again, it's unknown if the makers of American Pies Presents: Girls' Rules reached out to the veteran star, but at this stage in his career, he's probably looking beyond the paycheck involved.
