Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy have all signed on to return for the fourth installment of the American Pie franchise, which has now been titled, American Reunion.
Biggs played the lead character of Jim Levenstein in the original American Pie trilogy, and Levy played his father. Scott of course played the now-iconic Steve Stifler, a role which first made the actor famous.
We've known for some time that a fourth American Pie was coming, and that the intention was to reunite the original cast members rather than continuing down the beaten path of American Pie spinoffs, which have been filling direct-to-DVD bargain bins for over half a decade now. Harold & Kumar writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg will both write and direct American Reunion.
The plot of the film (as if it's hard to guess from the title) would find the Pie gang reuniting after some time (likely a decade) to attend...oh, I don't know...a high school reunion? Of course there would be an equal mix of comedy and heart as the boys-turned-men reflect on adult life and all the memories of their mischievous youthful years.
THR reports that Universal Pictures is still in talks with other original cast members like Thomas Ian Nicholas (Kevin), Tara Reid (Vicky), Chris Klein (Oz), Mena Suvari (Heather) and Jennifer Coolidge (Stifler's Mom) to all return as well. (What about Fitch?)
American Reunion might inspire fearful thoughts of other old-friends-as-older-men comedies gone wrong (Grown Ups, looking at you...); but then again, Hurwitz and Schlossberg made magic (in my opinion) when they were able to both write and direct Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, so at the moment I'm actually optimistic that they can do something great with American Reunion.
This franchise is tied to my own memories of high school (the first one left quite the impression back then), so I'm will be going into this new installment with warm feelings of nostalgia. Hopefully those feelings won't be crushed.
Right now American Reunion is slated for release sometime in 2012.
