Ewan McGregor is going to be a very busy man over the course of the next year. The actor, who is currently reprising his role in Trainspotting 2, will also be pulling double duty on FX’s Fargo in the show’s third season, and has even admitted that he’d be open to reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kanobi if that opportunity was presented to him.
Although McGregor will be popping up on both the big screen and the small screen in the coming months fairly often, what fans and critics haven’t seen to this point is his potential off-screen as he tackles the role of director. Well, fans got their first glimpse as to what McGregor’s directorial debut will look like, as the first trailer for McGregor’s American Pastoral was released this week.
The trailer for the film, which is based on the 1997 novel by Phillip Roth, begins with a literal bang – a convenient store explodes as a man steps back inside. Later, viewers are introduced to McGregor’s character, along with his wife (Jennifer Connelly) and daughter (Dakota Fanning) and the fallout from Fanning’s character’s actions. The film is setup in a postwar America, and one can gather from the film that Fanning and McGregor are at odds over the fallout and what comes next.
It’s clear from the trailer that McGregor and Fanning will play pivotal roles in the film, but not much is revealed about how Connelly’s character reacts and deals with her family coming apart at the seams over her daughter’s act of what appears to be a politically motivated act of terrorism. A big-screen adaption for Roth’s book has been in the works for over a decade now, but after a few directorial and developmental changes -- McGregor stepped in after Philip Noyce (Salt) stepped out -- the film finally became a reality with McGregor at the helm as star and director.
Although it is just the first trailer, American Pastoral has the look and feel of a potential thriller. The atmosphere is chilling, which sets the tone for the trailer’s big explosion and all that follows. McGregor, Connelly, and Fanning are all capable actors, and it should be interesting to see what their on-screen chemistry will look like in the film.
Still, this first trailer does the job of setting the scene for more character-specific trailers and teasers in the months to come.
American Pastoral is expected to hit theaters October 21, 2016.
