In 2011, Steven Tyler joined American Idol season 10 as a judge. Following the departure of Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres, and Kara DioGuardi, the Aerosmith frontman judged alongside Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez, who also made her judging debut that year. Known for being the show’s “loose cannon,” Steven was recognized for his sense of humor, as well as his eccentric behavior throughout the seasons.

Before taking part in the show, Steven, who is also known as the “Demon of Screamin,” was known for his work with Aerosmith. This work earned him a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was also named one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Singers. He ranked number three on the Hit Parader list of the Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time. The same year he appeared on American Idol, he also presented at the Kids’ Choice Awards and released an autobiography called Does the Noise in My Head Bother You? In addition, he toured Latin America and Japan with Aerosmith.

According to an insider who talked to the Los Angeles Times, Steven reportedly made between $8 and $10 million per season. While his paychecks were massive, he is believed to be one of the lesser-paid American Idol judges. The show's highest-paid judges are Simon Cowell and Katy Perry, who make double what Steven got. Meanwhile, Jackson earned $6.5 million and Lopez earned $17.5 million.

Steven’s addition to the show initially caused a feud in his band. The members of Aerosmith thought his American Idol gig interfered with the band’s touring. Steven didn't think that doing the show adversely impacted the band. He thought the other band members were jealous. During American Idol hiatuses, he wound up working with Aerosmith on a studio album and later performed their classic hit, “Dream On,” during the season finale. Since then, the band has put the drama behind them. However, Steven said issues with the band were the reason he pursued American Idol

After two seasons, Steven left the show and was replaced by Keith Urban. Allegedly, his departure was due to him not receiving the pay raise he desired. Steven's management team was unhappy after learning that fellow judge J-Lo earned far more than him. The team insisted Steven was just as popular as Jennifer. While she returned for season 13, Steven left permanently. Amid his exit, he said, “After some long...hard...thoughts...I've decided it's time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit. I strayed from my first love, AEROSMITH, and I'm back — but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I got two fists in the air and I'm kicking the door open with my band…,” as per Ultimate Classic Rock.
