The top 5 contestants of American Idol's season 20 have been revealed. Three out of the five competitors are women, and singer Nicolina Bozzo stands as one of the favorites to win. Her powerful and superb vocal performances have reminded many of other legendary female contestants that have appeared on the show.

These female contestants made their way through the most memorable and prolific music careers due to their amazing vocal skills, range, tone, and techniques, which stood out in comparison to the rest of the competitors on American Idol. Even after all these years, they are still remembered and followed by fans and Redditors, and promise to continue for a long time as the audiences' favorites.

Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks was a competitor in season 6 and became the youngest person to win at 17 years old. By 2012, she was also on her way to becoming one of the most successful the show has ever had, selling 1.3 million singles in the US alone (via The Shahab).

When it comes to singing, as MarcusD1994 puts it, "People also tend to leave Jordin Sparks out of the conversation. The ONLY American Idol contestant (and one of the few artists in music history) whose first five singles all became Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 singles." There is no doubt her voice transcended in pop culture and history.

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson won season 1 and is considered one of the American Idol best winners of all time. Her impressive vocals and charming personality stole the hearts of thousands of fans and placed her as one of the most memorable female singers in the competition. Many would agree that Clarkson was a great vocal coach too, helping other aspiring singers to achieve their dreams by mentoring them to a win on The Voice.

Therefore, it's not surprising that Clarkson still has a huge fanbase, with Reddit user, shatteredmatt, praising Clarkson for her "immense singing talent" and comparing her to the likes of "Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion." She has definitely cemented herself as one of the most successful contestants in the competition.

Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood followed Kelly Clarkson's footsteps and achieved an unpredictable fame and musical triumph within the United States. After winning season 4 of American Idol, Carrie broke many records, reached number one spots on Billboards, and recorded multiple albums.

For most, it is very impressive to revisit Underwood's audition and see such a young and shy contestant. Her transformation as an artist in front of the world's eyes has been undeniably spectacular. ChloeBaie commented "I agree that Carrie is the most successful Idol from a pure musical standpoint. She went from being a small town college student to a legitimate country music superstar."

Jennifer Hudson

Although she had one of American Idol's most controversial eliminations, but there is no doubt that Jennifer Hudson has one of the most magnificent and powerful voices to ever appear on the show. Her elimination left people in shock given that, as ConfectionNo6744 explains "she was so much better than the other contestants for 2-3 weeks straight."

A voice like that could not have stayed hidden for too long after the elimination, and years later, she got the role of Effie in Dreamgirls and of Aretha Franklin in the biopic Respect. Songs like "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" or any of Aretha's hits, require the most talented voices to be performed, and Jennifer Hudson is always up to the task.

Tori Kelly

It's hard to believe that a huge and successful singer, like Tori Kelly, auditioned for American Idol and got a "no" from Simon Cowell. Not only that, but he also referred to her voice as "annoying," which really summed up his mean personality. But thanks to the good ear of Victoria Beckham, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson, Kelly got through and became a sensation.

Reddit user Sapphire1921 said it all when she commented "Whether She's Singing Gospel Or Pure Pop, Tori Kelly Is Positively A Star." Unlike Simon, a lot of people agree she has a beautiful and sweet voice that has also the technique to do impeccable runs and riffs. Her memorable talent has led her to some great opportunities, allowing her to perform with Andrea Bocelli and Ed Sheeran, and also star in the animated musical comedies, Sing and Sing 2.

Fantasia Barrino

With an extraordinary voice that sounds like Macy Gray and Mary J. Blige, it's safe to say that Fantasia has one of the most unique vocals to appear on American Idol. As Destrokk813 perfectly summarizes, fans got "goosebumps" whenever she sang, with the user also arguing that "Summertime" was one of her performances along with "I Believe" (despite it "being like the cheesiest single ever").

Every note she sings becomes instantaneously remarkable and distinctive from all other versions. It's not only her impressive range and technique, but her raspy and thin voice make her stand out from most past and future female competitors. Randy Jackson even admitted her performances were the best he ever heard in any season (via Today).

Pia Toscano

Only the best vocal performers can sing Celine Dion songs. Not only because her songs require a beautiful voice, but because they demand a handful of vocal qualities and skills. And in the case of Pia Toscano, as BuckCrustyPetey8 said "she is one of the best talents EVER to be in the show. Period. She had it all, range, power, tone, etc.".

Without those qualities, it would have been impossible for Toscano to sing a song as difficult as "All By Myself" with such perfection in season 10. The judges recognized her incredible ability to reach Celine's impossible high notes while also offering something new to the original song. Even though she got eliminated, she shares the stage nowadays with David Foster and Andrea Bocelli, and still proves she is one of the best.

Lauren Alaina

Nowadays, she is making news in the TV show, Beyond The Edge, but Lauren Alaina was once a 15 year old contestant who left Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson with their jaws open.  The lead vocalist of Aerosmith sang a brief duet of "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" with Lauren and shocked audiences with their amazing improvised performance.

Lauren Alaina ended up in second place in season 10 of American IdolMarionCotesworthHaye pointed out "She was the runner-up to Scotty McCreery! People loved her!". And indeed they did. Many videos of wild audiences, clapping excitedly to every single one of her performances prove it.

Haley Reinhart

Haley Reinhart became one of the favorite singers of the Postmodern Jukebox and her jazz covers of hits like "Creep" by Radiohead, "Habits" by ToveLo, and "Can't Help Falling In Love" are still played by millions. Her distinctive voice cracks, vibrato, belting and color were noticeable since she auditioned on season 9 of American Idol. Soon she became one of the favorites of all time.

Her duet with Casey Abrams is still considered one of the best ones of American Idol's history, and both were contestants that should've won. Milopoke even recalled the moment "Haley Reinhart and Casey Abrams went HAM and got a standing ovation, and it wasn't even performance night?" It's been 11 years since she entered the competition, and she is still nailing it.

Melinda Doolittle

Melinda Doolittle became another one of Postmodern Jukebox's favorite guests. On top of that, as MarionCotesworthHaye points out "Melinda put out an incredible album called Coming Back to You. I really encourage you to check it out if you’re a fan of hers."

Her powerful and incredibly controlled vocals impressed fans and judges. In every single performance, she showed such a developed and trained technique that it was obvious she had years of experience as a back up singer. Many of her fans, and even Simon Cowell, recognized her as one of the best female singers on the show.
